The Boll Worm.?Wo wore haudod
tho othor day by Capt. J. L. Moorcr,
several bolls of cotton, literally eaten up
by the Boll Worm. Tho Captain in
formed us that they have taken to his
cotton crop iu considerable numbers, and
aro doing much damage. The holla pre
sented to us were of different sizes from
the first forming to the full grown boll,
and all punctured, some of them eaten
out cloas>
Mr. Kramer's Geld is also attacked by
this worm, and it is feared will do much
damngc to his promising crop.
New Cotton.?The Courier of tho
25th, notes the arrival of seven hales of
Hew cotton in Charleston on tho 24th
inst. Among them wore two bales from
a. Lyons, Florence. S. C, consigned to
A. J. Salinas, Factor, one classed full
middling, sold at '.'A cents ; one classed
low middling at i!2i cents. These were
the highest prices recived at date.
The first shipped from this place was
two bales for Join; Ea?tcrlm, by Messrs.
Cornelson, Kramer Si Co., on Tuesday.
The first bought here was one bale, pur
chased by Messrs. Bull, Scovill & Pike,
on Wednesday, from Mr. F. J. Buyck.
Fme!?On Monday morning last
about 10 o'clock the alarm of fire was
heard iu our streets. Simultaneous with
the first breath of alarm, tho Engine
House was surrounded by the Red-coats,
rushing to their matJiecu. Iu a trice
the Young vmerica was en route, at a
brisk trot to tho fire, her drugs manned
by her prompt and efficient members.
Their services however, we are glad to
say wove not needed. The fire which
was at the residence of Mr. C. B. Clover
was soon extinguished, and very little
damage was done the building.
' Too much praise cannot be bestowed
upon the Youug Americas lor their or
ganisation and energy. The time may
come when their services will be seriou
ly needed, and wc feel confident that
thoy will be found ready.
Dreadful Rencontre.?By a friend
just from Blackville, we learn that a ter
rible rencontre took place there, . last
Monday night, between Mr. Thomas
Ahlrieh and Austin Enochs. The af
fray grew out of an old grudge. Both
parties used their pocket k uives. Enochs
was terribly cut up and is not expected
to livo, while Aldrich will lose an eye,
and is otherwise badly cut.
Mr. F. E. Saliuas, of Bamberg, grati
fied us with a visit at our office on yes
terday. Wc call attention to his card
,in this issue.

Mean, Decidedly.?We have sevo
ral complaints from our subscribers of
lato about not boing able to keep their
paper long enough to road it. Some peo
ple, wo bolieve, never will subscribe and
pay for a paper, as long as they can loaf
ouo uud read it at their neighbors ex
pense. These same chaps, perhaps, are
iu the habil of borrowing their neighbors
pots and ploughs, and if thoy happen to
break cither, say it was badly cracked
when they got it. About the moanest
thiug we know of is for a man to recoivo
another ones labor and not pny for it.
Tho OllANCJEBURO News is furnished
at a little over threo cents a copy, just
ubout what it cost us for the paper and
the printing, nud wo somo times hoar
the remark, your price is too high. We
generally "dry up" when we hear this,
with the reflection that some persons arc
too mean to take a paper. We did have
one of these fellows subscribe once, but
before he left the office he asked us if he
preserved all tho papors, if we wouldu't
buy them back at the end of the year
