Death of an old and Estimable
Citizen?Wo are pained to announce
the death of Mr. Chrlstiuu Arunt, uu
old and respectable citizen of our Coun
ty, on Thursday morning last. Ho
met with uu accident in being thrown
front his buggy last Sunday afternoon,
by which his hip nnd thigh bone was
fractured. Ho suffered excruciatingly
up to the time of his death. He leaves
many friends to mourn his loss.
Drowned.?A colored man by the
name of Lewis, in the employ, wc think,
of Dr. B. H. Knotts, on Bull Swamp, in
%i fit, Toll iuto Kindt's lower mill pond a
few nights since nnd was drowned.

States Congress. Wo intended publish

burg was nut in the Hue of the total
eclipse of the suu last Saturday, yut wo
were gratified at seeing her face covered
to a large extent. The sky was cloud
less, aud.tho view unobstructo I. We
took ti sight with others, through a piece
of smoked glass, aud made up our mind
not to look tignin for the same sight in
our lifo-tiiuc. The offeot on the weather
was remarkable?changing rapidly from
warm to cold. Sunday morning a sent
by the tiro was found to be very com
fortable, and up to the present time wc
have cool, delicious weather. Wc have
accounts from where the total eclipse
was seen, of its wondrous sublimity, and
awe inspiring effect, which leud.s our
niituls to adoration, of the great Creator
of the Universe. Suoh u sight won't be
seen agaiu this century.

Important Enterprise.?Wo arc
pleased to learn, says the Columbia
J'/icciti.r, ol an important enterprise on
foot which promises to bo of great value
to the farming interests of the whole
State. A joint stock company is being
formed among the planters, along the
lines of railroad centreing in Columbia,
for the erection of a large mill for press
ing oil from cotton seed. 1 he stock
holders will send their seed to the mill,
which will pay freight, press out the oil.
and return the oil-cake, with a third of
the profits on the oil to the tanner Bond
ing the seed. The remaining profits of
the mill leave a very handsome net in
come to the stockholders. The sub
scription books arc oj mi at the office oi
Colonel William Wallace, and wc learn
that the stock is being rapidly subscr b- d
to bo paid in cash, payable in October,
and in cotton seed. The many lilies of
railroad centreing here offer peculiar ad
vantages to such an enterprise, and a
largo business is confidently expected,
seed having been already offered from
Georgia and from every accessible por
tion of this State. Cottonseed oil-cake
is readily eaten by all kinds ol'.stock, is
more nutritious aud digestible than corn,
and the manure derived from it is four
times as valuable as that from corn ?
England imports this cake lurgely. aud it*
market value there is from 2 to cents
per pound (gold.) while corn brings less
than 1J cents per pound. At present
the only value of cotton seed to our far
mors is as manure for corn. It is thus
converted into feed at the delay, expense,
and risk of making the uex*i year's corn
crop. To have it immediately converted
into oil-cake is to get a bird iu tlie baud
worth, in every sense, two in the bush.
