Thb Payment of Taxes.?Our
readers will observe from the advertise
ment of the County Treasurer, that he
Will soon eall on thorn for the amount of
their Taxes, and wo would advise overy
one from whom the law demands a tax, to
pay it, if possible. It has to be paid,
there is no way to escape it that we
j know of, and if not paid by the owner of
the property, additioaul expenses will be
attached, as a natural ennsequeuce, and
perhaps much property change hands at
^? sacrifice. We regret to hear some of
<our citizens say they do not intend to
make an effort to pay their taxes, that
the Treasurer may scli, &c. We believe
-the majority of our people own more
land than they can make profitable by
holding the 6umc, and if they so desire
could dispose of what thoy do not actu
ally need, at perhaps, a fair rcnumera
tion, but we do not believe in allowing
^our lands to be sold to pay tuxes. It
would speak bad fur us as an enterpris
ing, go-ahead people. Our advice then
to all, is to pay the tax, if it takes the lnst
'button from Joel's coat.
Dr. T. J. Goodwyn, who resides near
Fort Motte, iu this County, sends us a
Cotton Boll which he gathered from his
field on the 1st instant, leaving four
more on the same stock. Who can beat

We had a jolly, gushing rain Friday
night, which bus allayed the extreme
heat to soiue extent. Tuesday, Wednes
day, and Thursday last, the Thermome
ter, in the shade, variated from 05 to
100?. Dot enough to make us sigh for
mountain breezes, and carry our mind
back to days when we could laugh with
out wilting.
We have glowing descriptions of the
' Cotton and'cord crops all over our * un
aiJa* Rapid strides have been made by
these farm comforts, to regain what they
lost in the early part of the season.
The doings of old mother Earth pleases
us wondrously.e

PhOOKESS.?We were much pleased
on Thursday last "in going through the
establishment of our friend und towns
man, Mr. Thomas Ray, to see the deci
ded improvement made in his carriage
manufacturing department. When the
war closed, Mr. Ray, to uso a common
expression, was "dead broke"?but, by a
proper display of energy, close industry
and good judgment, he is now on his
? feet again, and new and enlarged work
shops have taken the place of small aud
dilapidated ones. Mr. Ray can put up in
fine Style anything that runs on wheels
from a wheelbarrow to a coach.

nounce to the shaving public that we

one whom we can trust. Oraugeburg
has long needed an establishment of the
kind, and now that we have one, wo
hope the citizens of our county will give

season for small pox is approaching, we
would call attention to tho following euro
for that dreaded malady, which is com
municated to a Gorman paper in New
York by a correspondent in China. It
is said to have been discovered by a sur
geon of the British army on duty in
China. The modo of treatment is as fol
lows :
When the preceoding fever is at its
hoight, and just before tho eruption np
pears, tho chest is rubbed with croton
oil and tartnric ointment. This onuses
tho whole of tho eruption to appear on
that part of the body, to the relief of the
rest. It also secures a full and complotc
eruption, and thus prevents the disease
from attacking the internal organs. This
is said to be now the established mode of |
trcatmont iu tho English army in China,
by gcuoral orders, and is regarded as a
perfect euro.
The Ten Commandments ndoptcd by
tho "craft" and expected to be followed
1. Enter softly.
2. Sit down quietly.
3. Subscribe for tho paper.
4. Bon't touch the poker.
5. Engage in no controversy.
7. Bon't smoke.
