The Taxes.?Wo soe hand bills post ed on the.streets of our Town, calling a meeting of the Tax Payers, on Monday next, to take into consideration tho rais ing of the Assessment of property in this Couuty by the State Board of Equaliza ? tlon, from $1,444,069, the Roturn of our Assessors, to $4,332,207. At the same time that we dcnounco this movement of the State Board of Equalization a flagrant outrage upon tho people of our County, an act denouncing our whole people as perjurers?and uot tu be justified by any explanation?we .would caution this called meeting to do nothing rush. If tho powers that be, any we must pay this tax wo will have it to do, but we can do it undor protest, and then test tho matter in our courts. Infanticide.?A colored woman was arrested and lodged in the jail at this place tho other day for the murder of fcer child directly after ita birth. The evidence before the Jury of Inquest was to tho following effect?about two weeks bince, some children in hunting turkey nests, in Mr. McKewn's wheat field, came across tho child, where it was thrown by its mother?as soon as she found it was discovered she removed it behind the garden fence of Mrs. Hull, whore it was again discovered, aud one of Mrs. Hull's servauts placed it in a box. The mother got hold of ita gain and thiew it in the woods, when a colored man made her show him where ahe had placed it, and then buried it. The unding of the Jury of Inquest was, that the child came to its death by the hands of its mother. She is a daughter or the notorious \foc Larkins, who says a white man has no rights iu this country, and that he intends to import immigrants from Afri ca to Btreugthon the radical party. Durham, Pas tor of the Ontngcburg Baptist Church, ?V>r two weeks past has been couductiug ft protracted meeting at Providence Church. This is a newly erected edifice, and was organized into a Baptist Church the fourth Sunday iu May last. On last Saturday aud Sunday, the Doctor bap tised twenty converts, nineteen of whom were originally members of the Metho dist Church, aud one of them a class leader, Mr. Amos Ruokc. Tho sacred right of Baptism will be conferred upon five candidates, ut this place, in the Orangeburg Baptist Church, oa the night of the second Sunday in this month. The good work is progress ing. - i miwti >.-?m?iiii Tue Weather.?For the past two weeks has been hot and dry. The vege tation in our gardens aro suffering severe ly for rain. ?i ?-? - ? in? i ? ? t? cotton.?We went over a few fields of Cotton the first of t'.iis week, and the stand aud growth of tho weed made us feel sad. Last year this time, Cotton in these fields were iu bloom?this year it is just above the ground, yellow leafed and sickly. We would not give fifty dollars for a ten ocro field of it. If what we saw is a fair sample, which we hopo not, of the Cotton in the County, our farmers in that staple are bankrupt. The open well on Mr. Ensterlin's lot, corner of Russell and Broughton Streets having beeu roported iu a dangerous con dition. It was moved and seconded that the elerk notify Mr. Eusterlin request ing him to fill up the well, or have a sub stantial fence put around his lot, before the expiratiou of 30 days from above date. The Committee on Hygiene and Po lice of Orangeburg would again enjoin upon her good citizens the necessity and iuipoitanco of keeping their premises freo from garbage and filth; thereby preserving, iu a material degree, the good health of the Town. Our psoplo havo been too much in the habit of going abroad for iustruetors aud information, and yet, who knows our wants and our means as well as those who live amoug aud arc of us. Wo have also been too careless and eulpably blind to the un numbered bounties, which the Creator bestowed upon us. Our climate, our soil, our mountains, rivers aud forests teem with wealth, but tho South has been short-sighted, indifferent and igno rant hitherto. Owing to tho ouco "pecu liar institution of the fair, sunny, South," it might still have boon wealthy, if it had uot been cxtravugaut, and it shall, and it must become one of the most prosper ous and desirable countries on the globe; if only our true men aud noble women will put forth their strength iu the fear of the L<ird. Light though is needed, concentrated efforts arc required, and tho good work must be done hero aud by ourselves. What to do and how it is best done; what to hoid fast, reject and adopt; to instruct, tOs counsel and to warn, is what tho State Agricultural and Mechanical Magazine undertakes to do? and it will do it too.
