Flogging of a School Oirl in Massachusetts.?A most painful case of flogging a little school girl has just transpired in tho town of Medford. It seems that the unfortunate victim was Annie E Enright, only thirteen years of age; that one day she laughed in school, and when asked what she was laughing at, replied, "Nothing" The teacher. Mrs. Abby S. Morrill, then mado bet hold her upon the desk for half nn hour, and afterwards she took a large ruler nnd used it upon her hand until it was sore and blistered. She thou seized her by the throat, dragged her across the desk and threw her upon tho platform, and then, putting her kuces upou the little girl's stomach, struck her several times with a larger ruler thau before.? During all this the girl's dress was badly torn and also some of her underclothinj She was then kept after school, and could not get away until after she shouted to a boy from the window to go after hor mother, and then it was found necessary to remove her in a carriage. A physician who was called found both arras black aud blue from the shoulders to tho arm joint; also spots on her knees, two blisters ou the left hand, black and blue marks on the right hand nnd a violent pain in her stomach. The little girl wus so much exhausted that when tho doctor raised her up she fainted, and sho was so much swollen about the stomach that it was necessary to cut her clothing with scissors. Mrs. Morrill, the toachor, was arrested and brought boforo the Chorlcstown Police Court, where aho set up for defence that the girl was stubboru and she only tried to make her mind. Notwithstanding, how ever, the extreme cruelty shown towards the little one, aud the fnct that she wus confined to the house two weeks in consequence, Judgo Warren hold that the girl was naughty and deserved ' punishment, nnd he therefore discharged the teacher. It is evident that there is h demand for other than a Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Savannah Republican says, a very valuable home was placed on board the steamer Fannie at Baltimore for trans portation to that city on bor last trip, and that on the way the animal jumped over the railing into the sea. The engine was stopped, and by the cucrgy and skill of the officers and crew the horse was se cured and lifted on board the steamer ngaiu witbout having received the slight est injury by the adventure. The Irish blunder is tut generis; and it is not only of n class by itself, but it is of the best class. It always puzzles, which mere clownish ness docs not; but it always amuses by its oddity, its nov elty, and its humour. Of this order was the exclamtion of the Irish gentle man who, on getting n ten-pound prize in the lotterj', and finding that the prize was less than the money ho had paid for it, cried out, "What luck it was thflt I did not get the twenty thousand pound: I must have been ruined !" That means "An En gaged Individual 1" Swallowing a Bullet.?A lad swallow ed a small leaden bullet. His friends were very much alarmed about it. A doctor was found, heard the dismnl tale, and, with as much unconcern as be would manifest in a case of common headache, wrote the following laconic note to the lad's father:?"Sir, Don't alarm your self. If, after three weeks, the bullet is not removed, give the boy a charge of powder. Yours Ac.-P. S. Dou't shcot the boy at anybody." The State Land Commissioner.? Mr.C. P. Leslie, recently appointed Land Commissioner for the State of South Car olina, in pursuance of law, filed bis bond yesterday, qualified and entered upon the discharge of the duties of his office. C.?Daily News 25. Four Persons Burned to Death. A shocking accident took place in St Paul's Parish, near New Road Station, on the Savannah and Charleston Rail road, on the night of the 14th instant, by which a colored man, his wile, his wife's sister, aud a baby fourteen months old, met a horrible death. Nothing was known to he wrong until the morning of the 15th, when sorao persons who lived in the neighborhood wcro passing by and found that the house of the de ceased bad been burned. Upon exam ining the ruins they found the remains of the whole family so charred and dis figured as to bo unrecognizable. It is supposed that tho fire broke out in the I night, and that the smoke suffocated the unfortunate people while they wcro sleep ing. A coroner's inquest was held by James W. Qrau, Magistrate of Colletou County, and a vordict returned of acci dental death.?Daily News. A Cunning Scot.?"Come back, sir, that's not the road," said Lord Engling ton to a trespasser in his park.
