We are done crying after "spilt milk."
We made a flying visit to our Capital :i few
days since. We hud not the pleasure of see
ing hia Excellency Governor Scott, though wc
danced"attendance for an hour or so. Wc,
however, hud n pleasant and agreeable chat
with his Secretary, Mr. Heart. Our impres
sion of this fine old gentleman is, t h it he is
the right unit in the right place, and wc must
congratulate our worthy Governor for his fore
sight aud judgment in the selection of so
worthy a man to carry his portfolio.
We had the pleasure of greeting our esteem
ed friend! Captain Parker, the Honorable
State Treasurer. Who even amidst the rush
of business?it being the last day of the Ses
sion?found time to please us in his chat.
Our interview with the Secretary of State
and the Comptroller-General, were pleasaut
aud satisfactory. These gentlemen were also
much pressed with business, but their arrange
ments were so wisely made and governed, that
n visitor could not feel himself an intruder.
We?werc sorry to find our frieud, and Hon
orable Seit.?tor, Major ,J<*a. A. Green, on a bed
of affliction. He has suffered severely for the
last month from Hemorrhage of the lungs.
We are glad to state, however, that he is slow
ly recovering, and if uo relapse takes place, ex
pects to be here in the course of the week.
The General Assembly adjuurucd sine die
on the 24th iust.
T. K. Sasportas, Representative from this
County in the General Assembly, has been ap
pointed Postmaster at this place. This is, wc
believe, the first Federal appointment of a
colored man to office in the State.
We noticed some since the arrival of Young
S. Bobo, at the Orangcburg County Hutcl,
kept by Sheriff Ripgs. who administers the
hospitalities of his House with credit to him
self aud we presume satisfactorily to his guest
But in consequence of several of his patrons
leaving a short time since fir parts unknown.
We learn that an Order has been applied for
and obtained from his Honor Judge Carpen
ter, requiring Sheriff Higg* to deliver the body
of Mr. Young S. Bobo to the Sheriff of Rid -
land County for aafo keeping. Mr. Hobo will
carry with him our wishes that he find his
Dew quarters comfortable.
Easter.?Easter is a movable feast, being
the first Sunday after the lull moon which hap
pens upon or next after the twenty-first day of j
March (the vernal equinox). The period
which it can occur extends from March 22d to
April 25th?thirty five days. From this feast
?-?the Christian pas'sovcr?are calculated all
the other inovcable feasts, as well as the
fasts, observed by Christiaus.
Easter is ao called from the Saxon "Oater,"
to rue, being the day commemorative of Christ's
resurrection; or, ns others think, from the
Teutonic goddess Ost era, whose feast was cele
brated early in spring.
The egg at Enster is an emblem of the rising
up out ol the gruvc, in the same manner as
the chick, entombed as it were in the egg, is
in due time brought to life. As an emblem
of the ouiverse, tho work of the Supreme
I'tvi11 it v, the egg hud a place in the theology
find philosophy of the Egyptaius, Persians,
Gauls, Greeks, and Romans.

nor Scett, directing all needful measures to be
taken to carry into effect the recent act of the
General Assembly, for the removal of the
county seat of Barnwell County from Barn*
well to the Town of Bleckville.

Phosphate, the old and long established stand
ard manure, can be used either broadcast or
in the hill, or with the. teed iu the drift?in no
instance is it to be ploughed under a sod, nor
I bedded upon.
In case of re-planting or backward growth,
Rhodes' applied as top-dressing produces
speedy growth?it tloca not fire. Exposure is
of great advantage, as it absorbs ammonia from
the atmosphere, rain and dew?it being estab
lished that a large quantity of ammonia per
acre is evolved during the year from these
s lurccs.
An application of two hundred pounds per
acre is considered sufficient, for crops, but ex
perienced i lauters report three hundred pouuds
per acre as repaying the outlay?high man
uring, on a few acres, being the most desirable
under our changed labor system.
Professor Charles U. Shcpnrd, in a recent 1
paper, says:
"The planter will never obtain the best ef
fects of artificial fertilisers until he incorpo
rates athcm largely with composts of stable
manure, vegetable muck and wood aabes.
The idea of trusting to a few hundred pounds
to the acre of even the best fertilizers seems
next to absurd to the Northern or European
agriculturist, who thinks nothing of enriching
the same area with ten or fifteen tons of a
sound compost."
A well known author hung up his stocking
in jest last Christmas Eve. and his wife, very
much iu earnest, put a baby in it; whereupon
the author said : "My dear, darn that stock
ing."
