Thai it generally produces favorable results'
wherever- used, is a well established fact; but
the process by which those results are gained
does not appear. Some observers think that
the plaster retains the fertilising gas that arises
from JjWffiqg^egeJtablc matter, and gives it
off sjfsU(j?ro|& time for the uae of tbV
growing plant. Others think that tlio ef
fect ? doe to th?lime ami sulphur of which
piaster is c?mpoaed?it is sulphate of time.
Flint, iu bis book on Grasses, says : "The
infectious odor which rises from decaying vege
table matter from'the stablo, from the manure
hoaptlaW imperceptibly from the whole .sur
face of the earth, is one of the most important
elements for the growth oi the plant. Plaster
fixes this/and the first shower washes it Wo
the earth to teed the roots of plants.

measure, according to the generally received
opinion, on this subject, upon the amount of
this aWrious odor, or tho ammonia, which it
contains.. A,mmonia, commonly known as
hartsl|ofq,^itfaa exceedingly powerful stimu
lant. Nor will it appear unimportant when we
bear in niiud that'two and one-quarter pounds
of this ammonia, lost by fermentation, is equal
according to some, to the loss of one hundred
and fifty pounds of grass or grain,"
One fact seen s to favor this view of the
case, a|tj^ ^hal is, that plaster, when plowed
under produces no peiccptiblo ofi'ect on the
crop; but when sown upon the surface proves
a powerful stimulant to tho growiug plant.
Sir J@w?phry .Davy found, by experiment,
thai tbftaaae* of an acre of red clover contain
no less-than three bushels of plaster of Paris.
This fact would seem to prove that tho sub
stance of the. plaster" is7 absorbed by the plant,
for there is - no plant that shows the effect of
piaster! more readily than clover. Io many in
atances, it. is believed that from one to two
bushels of plaster sown on an acre of clover
has nearly doubled the crop.
On a light or sandy soil plaster is of very
little value, but on the surface of damp and
compact soils it may be used to great advan
tage. It is useful on pastures as well us on
meadows; and when mixed about half and
half with wood ashes, and dropped on euru or
potatoes soon after they como up, about a'
heaping spooniul to tho hill, the result will be

It was common for farmers in New Eng
land, forty years ago. to haul plaster in the
rock a hundred and twenty miles, brcuk it into
pieces ab"b%t Mie si*o of hickory nuts, and take
it to the mill, where it was gronnd for use on
their farms. The prime cost of tho article
was tri|ftog, but the labor bestowed upon it
brought; it-up to u high price; but as they per
severed in the practice year after yoar we cou
cltade that they believed it to be a payiug

Medicino Bluff creek February 24. General

with orders to move along the south side of
Wichita Mountains to the head waters of the
Red river, thence north to Wachitn, thence to
Camp Supply, nt tho junction of the Denver
and WoM rivers. Affairs at Medicino Bluff
creek are in a htgly satisfactory condition.
The Iudians are convinced that they can find
protection at no season of the year, and the
campaign has already proved a salutary lesson.
There is not a hostile Indian within the limits
of the Mission department. The refractory
tribes have,been entirely subdued. Tho few
that haveswt yet come in but have made pro
mises, have been driven out of the department.
The troops are in file health. Weather cold.
Camp Supply, at the forks of the North
Canadian, will be kept up for the present. My
mail dispatches will give the details of this
brilliant Indian campaign. Before reaching
this point-the* General met the courier sent
with the^ telegraphic announcement of his
promotion to tho Lieutenant Goneralcy. The
General's arrival was entirely a surprise. Ho
leaves by special train to-morrow for Fort
Lcavenworth, thence immediately to Washing
ton, whither he has been summoned by tele
graphic despatch.

given, a most atrocious act was committed in
our city. It seems that a man named John
Chase, who ia well known in the city as a man
of bad oharacter, and frequently appoaring in
the Mayor's court, was on what is usually known
as a "Bfn*." In company with a young man
of this ehy, he was going down McDonough

since was one of the happiest families in town.
Blessed with plenty of this worlds goods,
nothing seemed to trouble them, and every
thing went ? on smoothly. But the man went
into speculations, and little by little tbo money
was lost until he was'considerably reduced und
forced to go to work for n living. With what
remained of their fortune, the wife furnished
a house and keeping a number of boarders.
But nothing seemed fo prosper. The boarders
left, Icaviug ut^paicr billig and ope of them at
last seduced a daughter of tbo landlady, and
when her shame became knowu the guilty niau
was found to bo a clerk in a Maiu street store.
Ho was forced to marry her, but immediately
after left for parts unknown, and has.not been
heard of since. The girl gave birth to a
daughter which lived a few weeks and the"
died. Last fall the father ox the family died
very suddenly at 5 o'clock in the morning and
was buried at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Last
week the moiher was taken sick with diptheriu,
and died iu a few hours. Her remains were
conveyed by tho midnight train too neigh
boring city and buried the next morning. The
daughter took tho disease of-the mother, and
alter a few days of intense suffering she too
was released by death, and ae the hut member
