The hoosier took tho proffered vial, and
feeling himself j>roof against that quantity of
raw whiskey, thought time he could stand tho
"rod-salt"- witli impunity, and accordingly
sprinkled a junk of beef rather bountifully
with it, and forthwith introduced it into his
capacious mouth. It soou began to take hold.
He shut his eyes, and his features began to
writhe, denoting a very unhorinonious condi
tion, puysicnlly. a Tiutilly, W could staitd it
no longer, lie opened his mouth nud scream

"Take a drink of cold water from the jug,"
said the parson.
"Will that put it out ?" asked the martyr,
suiting tho action to the word. In a short
time, the unfortunate man began to recover,
and turning to tho parson, his eyes yet swim
ming in wntor, exclaimed:

"I do," mildly answered tho parson.
"Wal, I waut to know if you think it is con
sistent with your belief to go about with hcll

Promising 'to Marry thk (Qiul.?Wo,
yesterday, heard rather a gooti story on one of
our city miuistera. During last winter a
revival was iu progress in ouo of our country
churches near the city. Among the regular
attendants on the meeting was a beautiful aud
estimable, ..but rath?r. unsophisticated young
lady, whoso friends were very anxious to havo
her uuito with tho church.
She seemed, however, reluctant to do so,
and the minister in question was requested to
"talk to her." This bo did several times on
one occasion saying, in a jocular manner,
"Miss M?/if f you will joiu the churoh, I'll
marry you/' meaning ho would perform the
ceremony. Tho girl seemed pleased with the
propositio!!, and o. fow oveniugs after, walk
ed up'to the alter tand united with the
church.
Several weeks after this the minister
preaohed at the church, and, after services
met the young lady. "Brother?/'said she,
"you know y??i promised to marry mc if I'd
join the church. Are you going to do so ?
I don't wnutfto wait any longer," The minis
ter saw his dilemma und nttcmpted to explain.
"I -meant I would perform tho ceremony," ho
said;' "that's all. I can't marry you myself,
for I am already married, and love my wifo
foo much to desire to swap her off for an
other."
The young lady became indignant, [declared
that she'd leavo tho church, that she. "never
did havc much faith iu these town preachers."
Our ministerial friend declares that he will
*nover again use any other than plain scriptur
al argument to induce a young lady to join

committee in discharge of that duty, announce
that they havo examined tho subject, and beg
to stato:
1. That uo such disabilities uow exist by or
uudcr tho acts of Congress, known as the Re
construction net, tho State having been of
fleinlly oVolurod to be in the Union.
2. That no such disabilities exist under the
so-called hm?ndmdht, known as tho fourteenth
amendment to' the Constitution of the United
States, tho disabilities therein expressed hav

3. That no such disabilities exist by tho so
called State Constitution of 18?8, under which

they urge their hitherto disfranchised fellow
citizens, in every part of the State, to exercise

I'rcsidcut and Vice-President, of which right
they have been so long deprivod by military
