A soldier, being on picket reserve, went to
a faroa house, as ho said, to borrow a frying
pan, but for what, none could imagine, as
there was nothing to fry. However, he went
to the house, and knocked at the door, which
was opened by a lady, who asked what he
wished.
"Madam, could you leud mo a frying-pan ?
I belong to the picket down here."
"Yes, sir," and forthwith came the pan.
He took it, looked in it, turned it over again,
and looked into it very hard, as if not certain
it was clean. "Well, sir," said tho lady, "can
I do anything moro for you?"
"Could?could?could you -lend mo a piece
of meat to fry in it, ma'am?" and he laughed
in sptte of himself. Ho got it.

federacy and steadily followed its banners till

evil report, whether the sun of victory shed
light and hope upon the cause he served, or
whether clouds of defeat loWcrod upon him
and his associates in arms, he was over brave,
hopeful and dauntless. When the cause was
finally lost he returned to his old homo, and
hns sine? acted only with tho Democratic
party. During the illness which terminated
in his death. Carson repeatedly expressed
the wish that his body should be attired in a
suit of Confederate gray, and that some of his
old friends should attend his remains to their
last resting place.?Ilm desire in both respects
was fully carried out. His funeral was largely
attended by the people of Frankliu and its

all sir," was the reply of the judge.

ton, Sr., deceased, said lands being two tracts, ono
containing 250 acres, the other 200 acres more or
less. Under which orders sho was put in posses
sion of said lauds. On motion T. II. Cooke. Esq..
Solicitor, it is ordered. That all persons who desiro
so to do, may appear before me on the 2~>th day of .
