The seeds aro sown in the latitude of Boston, about the first of Juue, and the plants "put out about tho middle of July. Our season is about one month , in ndvancc of theirs in spring, and as much later in the fall; honce, to get the mine climate, wo must begin in July and transplant in August. . I have known one instance, in the neighbor hood of this city, in which several seed were drojiped in the cheeks, on the tenth of August. Very fine cabbnges resulted from tho experi ment. I would rather, however, transplant. Cabbnges must have their roots broken and bo set deep in the ground to head well and uni formly. The preservation in winter, is easily accom plished.?Dig out a tronch a foot or eighteen inohes deep, dry tho bottom thoroughly, by a slight uuderdrain, and pack the cabbages in, roots down and heads up, as thoy grew.? Cover over with corn stalks and straw, to keep out the hard frost. Throe degrees south of this, they need not be removed from tho field or garden. , Tho Savoys stand more frost than tho other varieties, and aro much better flavored. To savo seeds, plant out, in early spring, a few of the finest, best shaped, and hardiest heads, allowing only a single center shoot to grow up, which, keep oioct by tying to a stake. After tho Confederate troops bad gallantly charged the Conictcry Heights and been re pulsod, I wont out, as I was always glad to do, to render ?ny assistance in my power to the wounded. I made no distinction between a rcbol and- a Yankee, nnd I am cortain no gentleman would. Among the wounded was a Captaiu Willie S. Gray. As I catnc up to him I could sec through the gathering dark ness how deadly pale was tho fue? o'f him who lay on the ground before me. I placed my canteen to his lips and he drank with feverish haste. I sat down* besido him and ho began to speak very rapidly of homo j I held my head lower as bo could not speak above a whisper. He told mo his namo-nnd requested mo to write to bis family. Tell them, said he gently, "Thoy will miss me at home; they will look for my coining, but T shall never come." He held out bis hand and placed it in my own, and tho tears fell fast. We had met upon the battle field as enemies, but we were parting friends.
