Successful Rescue of Ilurglars.
On Thursday last, .while Deputy Shoriff
Silas H. Sydnor and two assistants was coin
ing to Ornngoburg, with throo prisoners under
{arrest for. burglary, the party was attacked on
tho Bclvillo Road, near the suburbs of Orango
burg, by a party of negroo.?5, led hy Jako Hau
ten and Joe Drown, who were friends of tho
/prisoners, Joe Brown being also ono of the
f parties named in tho Warrant, not yet arrcbted,
;In tho melee which oirsued, llio prisoners es
caped; but two of the reselling party were
badly wouuded. ' Mr. Sydnor aud his assistants
came at full speed to the Sheriffs ofBce, and
an armed party immediately slit otit to retake
the prisoners, and take the resottttVS Iblo custo
dy. This party found and took into custody
Jake Hanton (wounded), Adam Bookhart
((wounded), and Orrin McCord, (unhurt), who
were identified ns three of the rescuing party.
In attending to Jake Hanton, who was thirsty,
Orrin McCord, with one of the Sheriff's party
was sent to a branch iu tho road for water.
On reaching the branch Orriu attempted to
wrench the pistol from, the hands of his guard,
\vho shouted for help. Orrin thereupon broke
oand ran, and though called upon to stop, would
Hot do so; and would have gotton away, had
Ytot the guard shot at and wounded him, so
that, after running some two or three hundred
yards, he was ever taken.
On the approach of the wounded prisoners,
jlftiichh as roseuor* of ?ccu>id- AdoiiB, became lia
ble to an fetrcst for felony themselves, intense
c?tUcuicut was manifested by a number of the
negroes in town, led on by evil-minded men
among them ; but tho admirable eelf-possession
of Deputy Sheriff B. M. Shulcr, who called
upon the lending negroes to assist him in pre
serving the peace, operated to quiet tho oxcite
l incut, until the prisouers were carried to the
Keeper's quarters in tho jail. Afterwards,
nowover, Randolph, who now nppeard An the
scono of action, camo very near being sucoess
.1 f?l in raising a disturbance in the town; but
Town Marshall, Mr. John Williamson, prompt
ly attended to the matter, and through Ids in
. struthontality, Randolph's noisy crowd was dis
persed, aud the imminent danger of a serious
difficulty iu the town, was averted.
(In the early part of tho affair, the Sheriff
telegraphed to Columbia for troops, aud on yes
terdaj morning, Liout. Connor, of the 8th In
fantry, arrived with a detachment of 30 men
1
of tho same command. A party was mounted
and despatched as soon as possible, after the
alleged burglars and their rescuers, under the
Deputy Sheriff; and we trust the violators of
tho law will bo promptly ovortaken, and meet
their trial in duo time.
