In the issue of the YORKYILLK ENQUIRER for
the 4th of JUNE, will be commenced the pub
lication of the above thrilling and interesting
nouvclctte, written-expressly for its columns, by
oue of the musi popular authors of this state. The
principal scenes of the storynVe laid fn Charleston
and vicinity. 'nnd the st?r'y ertnnot fail to'provc in
teresting to all who aru familiar with tho events
which occurred in that loculity during the late
war.
One of the most painful circumstances connected
with the heroic defence of Charlestou, during its
three years of siege, is tobe found in the fact, that
during all this tiiac,.there were persons'in. the ci-y,
??mi Mgh, /*/>," Who were engaged as spies in send
ing Information to the besiegers. Drawings of tho
fortitications were furnished, weak points noted,
mid the movements of troopa.indicated ns soon' ne
begun, and the fleet notified of the time of arrivnl
nnd depart uve of blockade running vessels. So
cautiously did these emissaries of the ensmy con
duct their work,1 that for along time the skill of the
most eminent detectives was. bafiled in their
endeavors to break" up the Illicit correspondence.
These spies were tho source of extreme annoyance
to the Commanders in Charleston, and the informa
tion thoy woro.enabled to furnish, often thwarted
their best matured designs upon the enemy. Asa
