ing clay. If the soil is to bo limed or marled

Previous malting or grinding corn which is
fed to cattle, effects a saving of at least 25 por

Tho draining of wetland increases its value,
sinco it causes it to produce a larger aud heav
ier crop, and brings it earlier to maturity,'and

borhood.
Six measures of plaster sown broad cast in

100 per cent.
Periodical applicu&ms of ashes, serves to
keep lands in their full strength.
The highest possible cultivation of the soil
is necessary for the successful and abundant de
velopment of tho crop.
Crops cannot be realized in abundance
through a succession of years, unless care be
taken to return to tho ground an equivalent for
those things taken away in the products.
To keep meadows up to their full productive
ness, they should be harrowed, have"'immure
scattered over them, and rolled every other

tion of cotton for export in the raw state must
bo abandoned in the South. We no longer can
hope to compete with foreign countries since
the fact has been established that it cost about
twieo as much to produce it hero ns it costs
elsewhere, leaving tnit of view tho American
tax upon our producers of two and a half cents,
per pound. If this tax should bo rcpcalod, as
it possibly may be, the ensuing winter, still the
cultivation of cottou in this country, excopt
Just enough for home manufacture only, must
from' necessity be stopped, and provision crops
substituted therefor. And we shall probably
not be ablo to produco cotton for our own home
manufacturers without a high protective tariff

^Tiio tendency of all purely cotton growing,
countries is to neglect everything else and the
daily exports of wheat to European markets
afford strong evidence of this fact. Prices of
flour and wheat now rule high in Liverpool,
eaused by the demand for food from the East
India country, which has taken for its motto
tho exploded Southern idea that "Cotton is
King."
Transplanting Trees.?A correspondent
in Ohio asks us whether he can transplant trees
in the winter months, when he usually has
more leisure than at any other season of the
year. Certainly ho can. There is nothing to
hinder except the frost. ? Trees set out in un
frozen ground in December January,and Feb
ruary will, if carefully done, be about as suro,
to grow as ir. November or March. As to
evergreens, which ho further inquires about,
there is no difficulty as to their growing if pro
perly transplanted. Our own loss hac been
less with them than any other tree. They
should, however, be firmly staked tokeeptiiciu
in their places during tho high winds of March
