oughly Blacked. When tho Blacking has been

salt. These will cause the wash to harden,
and prevent it cracking, which gives an un~
seemly appearance to the work. 'If desirable,
a beautiful cream eolormay .be communicated
to tho above wash, by adding three pounds of
yellow ochre j or a good pear) or lead color, by
the addition of lamp vine or ivory blaok. ?< For
fawn* color, add four pounds qf umber, Turkish
or American, the latter, is' tho1 cheapest, ono
pound of India red, and one pound common
lamp-black. This wash may be applied with
a common whitewash brush, and will bo found
much superior, both in appearance and dura
bility, to common whitewash.
New Point in a Good Milk Cow. "
"?airyman," in tho Practical Farmer, for
September, presents a point in choosing a cow,
whieh is new to us, but there is certainly sound
philosophy in it. Other things being equal,
he considers a cow, which brings her first calf
at a season of the year when feed "a fresh and
tender and most productive of milk? as the
month of June, worth twice' as much as one
that brings hor first calf in winter. lie says
he saw a very promising half Aldefney heifer
which took a premium at the Pennsylvania
State Fair, for which tho owner asked 860.
Ho offered to give the price provided Bho was
to calve in June, but finding fihe was to calve
in February $30 was all he would offer for jt'erj

have satisfied him that commencing milk in
early summer is'an indispensable condition to
a good milker in after years, and the differ
ence is folly one-half in any grade of stock.
The philosophy of the difference in favor of
heifers coming in for the first of June, ho states
as follows: "The grass being then in the best
condition to produce a full flow of milk, all the'
parts, that tend to the secretion of milk aro
developed to their utmost capacity. The ud
der, the teats, and.milk voins become enlarged,
permanently: and the best cows I ever raised
we had to commence milking several weeks
before they calved, to prevcut-gargefc."
The theory seems to be that the milk vessels
become fixed in their capacity by their first uso,
or at least, that their subsequent development
will be after the type they aro first made to as
sume It is not reasonable to suppose that a
heifer two years old, under any circumstances,
will give as much milk as the same animal
will at four years old, and with the same ante
cedents, and in this sonse the milk vessels can
not be fully developed with the first calf, if the
boifer be quite young. But it is iroasonable to
suppose that the type of the lacteal vessels'in
their'proportions to the age and general de
velopment of the animal will becomo fixed at
the period alluded to, and the idea is well
worthy the attention of every, farmer.
[Wisconsin Farmer.
Secure the Leave?.?The woods are now
full of leaves. Indeed they appear to be more
abundant than ever, but farmers do not value
them as highly as we think they should. For
barnyards especially they are profitable to haul
in; They are obtained too when there is little
pressing work on band. Gathered up in heaps
they can be readily loaded in earts and wagons
with close shelvings by using either a 'cloth
?some two or three yards ^square, or with u
wooden rake and the arm. Hogs are Very
fond of them for litter, so aro cows; and for
compost they aro excellent.. As oat straw is
now usually fed to cattle and rye straw1 'com
monds a high price in the market, thcro is
nothing left for the purpose of littering * but
wheat straw. Honce forest leaves should be
held in higher estimation than they commonly
are.
