m^Bmmmmmw, &c. Opinion upon Cotton. Tho Suinter Watchman says: Wo aro in dcbtedtoa friend for the following extract Jtrom a letter of an old, and highly intelligent Cotton Factorof New York : I but MW ^ i The dissatisfaction with the prices Jr*a<jf.cotton is natural, and'if1 you had said dis may we would'have easily understood it. It '.', I js fearfulindeed, and'.will, rain many people.? ? '. But thero is no visible reason for -anticipating '.' any advance 'ja compensate ,.for holding, and our friends will be iciso if thoy ship as soon as they can. CotoneTC. will.havo given you tho figures'whioh exhibit the facts, vis j In a word, K 1 that our big war taught Europo how to do with out American cotton, t. e., by so stimulating 3 the production in all other .cotton producing I,, countries as to make up the needed supply as far as necessities go, for the world, independent of American cotton. This is the . case boiled ?down. ; The production in India: (Hindostan) ^Viibi very nearly quadrupled since '60. We arc not '.'Bears" in cotton. . We ore frionds of ccit ton aud cotton growers, and wish it was 91,00 . ? per pound, and couldn't bo had except in our U Southern States, but the facts are agciust us and it would he folly to blind our eyes to the fcoW:;. Hepc.?,,we endeavor^ nt\t the matter c v \?honestly before our constituents as we see and understand it. * * * Grapes on Elms. At the winter meeting of the Illinois Stato Horticultural society Mr. John B. Turner, a successful grape-grower, advocated tho gro^r-I ing of grapes on Elms. He said : When years ago I taught Latin to boys wo Used to read of the ancients letting their grape vines clamor on elms, but I thought little of the statement as a practical suggestion. But I find that I cannot keep my vine out of the elms. If I plant "near an elm the vines go up into it. I have ono vine that, despite my re monstrances, insists on going into the top of one of my elms. From it I sold during the past year $100 worth of grapes. I am, there fore, tolerably well satisfied with its willfulness; for these grapes did not cost mc a cent for cul ture or care. I am now planting live stakes in my orchard ; and elm stakes I hey aro. Such stakes will save the annual cost of training and pruning and, judging from my experience, ttiey will insure fruitfulncss. , The Citovs.?Tho. report of tho Department of ?Aj?riculture for October says of the wheat . c>op': It will surmount the figures of lust year by 40,000,000, to 50,000,000, hut will not reach the amount which should have been attained upon the ratio of increase'made between 1850 and I860 by 20,000,000. As an approximate estimate upon the present data, 220,000,000 to 225,000,000 of bushels may bo received as the crop of tho entire country for 1867. Tho oggrcgate yield of oats will exceed 280,000,000, or be about three per cent, above that of 1866. When to Plow tor ConN.?A rolling field of mellow soil, long in grass, is to be broken up, and put in corn next spring. The corn will do quite as well if planted oh a fresh turned sod. Grub . worms will suffer if 1 the plowing be done late this fall. What shall be dono ? Wo think it' deponds on the answers to two questions. Will tho laud wash if tho winter is opon and we havo hard.rains ? If so, let it lie in sod. Will you havo plonty of time to do the plowing next spring, or will you bo h crowded with work ? Usefhl Recipes. Graham Brbad.?To every quart of unbolt ed wheat meal add one eup of molasses, and one tablespoonful of lard orjauttor. Make it up with milk and yeast. When risen, work in a littlo soda, make in into loaves, raise again, nnd bake. . Ginger D?ors.?Two tablespoonfula of molasses, one of lard, half a cup of sour milk, ono teaspoonful of soda. Will be better with one egg, but can be made without. Flour enough to make a batter tk&t will drop easily. Bake quickly. Worth Knowino.?A poison of any con ceivable description and degree of potency, which has beon swallowed, intentionally or by accident, may be rendered instantly harmless by swallowing two gills of sweet oil.
