What an Industrious Man Can Do, ?dSi^Cr -the West Tho i)avcuport Gazette speaks of Mr. James Thompson, who came from 'Pennsylvania to Scott county, Iowa a dozen years ago; worth a fow hundred dollars, ITo now owns fovty '^ntrJUrms, averaging ouo hundred and sixty acres each, of in all about seven.thousand acres of land, at least half of which is under cultiva tion , the wholo will bo noxt year. Tho la?d ljes in, S,cott and Cedar counties... .The past, year ho put undor cultivation 2,200 acres new land. He is now having tw'?nty farm dwell ings, of six rooms each, framed and gotten ready, iu Davonport, so they can be hauled to his fibrin and gotten ready for his tenants. The tenants get one-third of the crop and two dol lars an aero for fanning new land, and the pamo .share, of tho crops with seventy-livo cents to one dollar en acre for cultivated land. If such an enterprise can succeed in tho far West, we may well ask "What can an indus trious man do, in the South?" How many uncultivated acres of the richest lands that heaven smiles upon arc to-day, awaiting some revolutionary* touch to make them start Into useful oxistonce! How many landowners thore arc with the means all around thorn- to ?build and people villages and towns, of which they possess tho greater share ; nnd yet who trios? No doubt an occasional attempt is made to do something after this kind, but how quickly small obstacles deter and discourage! What wo most require is persistent eifert, combined withcournge, liberality and genuine enterprise that which can wait upon the future for its re ward. But wow is the time to lay the founda tion for success. Now the eyes ol the people of the North and of Europe are being directed to the South, and if favorable inducements arc offered in a way that shall become public, and excite in the many the interest they arc calcu lated to create in a few, we would quickly have an influx of intelligent labor which would aid uh in rebuilding our shattered fortunes and digging us out of the Slough of Despond in which the whole State would seem hopelessly submerged.- -J)a ily Ch rtmictc. vQiterj)iliar Experiment. The terrible ravages of the catcrpiller in Louisiana this year have set the invention of tthc inhabitants of that State to work in a man ner which 8ms alread}' produced some wonder ful results. Tho Crc*cut. gives the following ?description of an invention by Mr. Ohas. Stciu anan: . "The machine ks-a-n ordinary upright steam Iboiler, to generate the steam, fixed upon wheels, the whole not weighing more than seventy-five pounds, which renders it very easy to convey and manage; issuing on cither side from the boiler is a tube about seven feet long (which <ean be made any length) vertically placed and provided with cocks to let on or shut out the steam'. Parallel to and touching this tube is another of the same si/Ai. say one inch bore. Hturmountcd by a tank or reservoir containing the exterminating fluid, and also furnished willi lancets. , At equal distances of six inches, through their whole length, these tubes arc perforated and supplied, at right sngles, with small pipes, the orifices of those of tho steam tubes striking iu a converging direction those of the fluid tube. The fluid being allowed to flow through the others; and takes with it the .fluid which is spread iu minute globules over and around the plant, instantly killing the Cotton worm, whether in embryo or in a state of maturity."
