Corn.?-More has been planted > this > year
I than last. In many instances buf jittlo cotton
is planted, and the energies of the farm devo
ted to corn. Yet they are all s'o badly in dobt
that an effort is made to grow all the cotton
i possible. In the census the corn crop is , put
down at'15,'065,60'G bushels. It will fall far
below that this year. I doubt if it reaches half.
To furnish any permanent relief it should be

an effort has been made this year to sow con

'Rice.?The census reported 119,100,528
pounds of 1 "ullcd or merchantable rice. The
great destruction of the expensive fixtures on
the rice,plantations by the war has nearly! bro
ken up the cultivation; added to this is the
want of capital and of labor, and the cultiva
tion of a plantation is the exception rather
than the rule, nor will the vast rice fields
be again cultivated till a new system of j
labor ? is established j resort must bo had
to the Chinese. If proper efforts are made
I haye no doubt abundant labor of that

And the Chinaman once domiciled on these
plantations,; there will be no - further want for
labor, and cheap labor, too, for there is scarce
ly any place on this continent where u China
man can live so cheap as on the . rice .planta
tions of the South.

Tobacco.?This crop has been considered
of small consequence in this State, the census J
only reporting 104,912 pounds; Whether
there be really difficulties of soil or climate, or
both, in tho way of successful and profitable
cultivation, I did not learn.' As a part of tho
State is on the same range of the Blue Ridge
with Virginia' iirtd North Carolina, there seems
no good reasons why it cannot be grown as I
well as in those States.

Soda Water.
A few days since, a gentleman from the
country ani huf recently Wpoused wife, visited
the.city for the purpose of seeing the "sight""'
While strolling through the streets, thoy |
thought they would indulge in the ln?ury of a
glass' of soda water. Entering ah apothecary
store, they made known thoir wants:
"What kind of/syrup ?" asked the man of j
pills.
"Wall, I guefis I'll, take some of tho syrup J
of squills/' answered tho countryman.
"We do dot use that kind," said tho olerk. i
"I know you don't bekase its costly. I will
have the syrup.of squills."
The druggist remonstrated, but all to no
purpose. His customer would*have squills, re
marking :
"?H the other syrups is" made of sugar, |
lemon drops,' Sarsaparille^ and sich things to
humbug folks."
Tho squills were proo?rcd and our hero ' re
quested to 'pour out for himself; and he did
so, taking a bountiful quantity, in order to get
his money's worth.
The, heroine being, asked how' she would
pr6for hers, raised herself to the suppbsed dig
| nity of a city belle, and replied :
"Beckon as how I'll try mine without any
squills, or any sw?ethin'."
.. In passing their own opinions on the drinks,
they gave anything but a favorable decision.
In a few moments pur hero began to expe
rienco a new internal sensation.
"Jerusalem!" he. exclaimed, "what's tho
matter with my stomach F* and before an an
Bwer could be returned, he was four miles off j

"I'm pisencdl" he moaned. "Only married

somebody ! I'll give a doctor fifty cents . to
