Rules for a Minister.
?di in v.- -? ?.. . T~- ? ? ? '
Rule 1. It becomes a minister's duty at all
times to be serious and prayerful.
2. His conversation should be such as he
would expect from a St., Paul or St. John.
3. A minister should not feel that his work
is accomplished when he has preached to a
congregation; but he should warn each man
privately with the same zeal thafc he displayed
in the pulpit-'
4. Watch your brethren of like profession,
or they will jest and talk the Spirit of Christ
entirely out of your heart?a dangerous ene
my your friend will prove.
5. Do not be satisfied with merely saying
your prayers, but wrestle with Clod in secret,
and He will manifest Ilimsolf to you in pub
K?.:. . ,
C> Exa ' .e yoursolf at tho closo of each day,
and ask yo rsclf if you have boon as earnest in
serving-God as you have been to procure tem
poral blessings. ' '
7. At the closo of every Sabbath examine
nnd ascertain whether you have warned your
brethren faithfully.
8.1 Spend half an hour every morning in se
cret prayer nnd meditation. ?*
9.-Remember the Sabbath day to keep it
holy. When you visit on Sunday, or call to
take dinner, instead of looking at gardens and
talking of crops, be bent in your mind to leave
a blessing, and do not leave until you have
prayed with the family.
Death at the Breakfast Tawi.e.?
Robert Bruce, a celebrated Scotch minister,
sat at his break fust-table one morning. Hay
ing eaten a boiled egg, ho turned to his daugh
ter and said: -
<:I think I amyot hungry; you .may bring
me nnofher egg."
.He then grew thoughtful :t moment, and
mus\ng a little, added :
"Hold; daughter,'hold! my Master calleth
me !'* ?
Here his sight failed him ; but culling for a
Bible, he requested his daughter to phicc his
finger on Romans 8: 28, I>9. This being done
he repeated tho verse, dwejling especially on,
"I am persuaded that neither life nor death
shall bo nblo to separate mo from the love of
God, which is in Christ Jesus my Lord." Ho
then said:
"God bo with you, my children. I have
breakfasted with you, nnd shall sup with my
Lord Jesus Christ this night!"
These were his last words, for, without a
shiver or a groan, he at once started on his
Uight to everlasting glory.

. Pine Straw.
Pino Straw as Miiloli is good. As a disin
tegrating inedium for very stiff soils l?iporni?
able to nhyit. can bb ^beneficial, but only for
that pur-poso. 53 The; leaf, of' the pine, is. conir
posed otjalicate. or. saud mixed with a base of
vegetable fibre' fthd resin. The outer boating
of the leaf is insoliiblo, as is also-the inner part;
hence it prevents, the soil from absorbing it.
Tho ashes from Pine Straw .submitted to ana
lysis, give less potash as a result than the ashes
of any?ofbor. ^vegotuhle, the proportions being.
0.15'lVl,000 parfsi Wheat straw, after the
grain is formed, gives .390 of potash in 1,000
parts, and before the heads, of. grain yields
4.-70" parts.' Corn stalks contain .175 'parts.
Cow. pea vines from .200 to .250*in 1,000 parts.
Potato vuies'.contain .also Jargo quantities of
?potash. Potash being one of' the' nmin consti
tuents of the plants we most raise, it is evident
that a soil deficient in it cannot bo productive,
and Pine'Straw will not give it' what is re
quired as it cannot bo absorbed by plants. In
the analysts of soils of different countries it is
shown that resinous matter is contained in
somo stcrile^ils, and iu such the rust attacks
w.l^cat, rye or oats.
In .some portions or Belgium", where pine.
Woods abound, and where tho inhabitants are
? . . . - '
conceded to bo the best agriculturalists in The
world, and as careful-of producing and.saving
manures ns.the Chinese, no tiller of.thosoil,
however short.of raw materials to bed his cow
or pig, will allow any Pine Straw to be used
for that purpose; that article is only used as
fuel by the poorer classes ; they well know that
rust would bo the result if used iu manures.
One of our tenants covered a part of a field
with Pine Straw, and* for'several years after
wards could no} raise cither wheat or clover on
it, notwithstanding heavy manuringaftcr.wards.
Five years ngo, 1 planted potatoes, and gave
them a heavy mulching of Fiflc Straw, the
ground being well manured previous to-, pulling
iii-tho potatoes. Next year the field was plant
ed in corn, and that portion previously mulched
produced stalks two feet smaller than the other
portions which had. however, never been ma
nured. Tho second year the field was sown in
oats, and the difference was very easy to detect,
tho portions' mulched produced less than half
the other portions uumuluhcd. ?
The .same results were observable in the
vegetable gardens. The gardener often com
plained of being unable to raise several kinds
of vcgetnbles upon grounds where manure
made with Pine Straw was used ; when using
manure made with oak leaves and'straw the
result was a fine crop of vegetables.
Yours, respectfully,
P. J. BKPCKMAXS.
High Manuring.
A correspondent of the O.ormantown Tele
graph, in urging nigh manuring, says : <;I can
point to farunora, who, iu addition to all the barn
yard manure.which thoy can manufacture; are
using from one thousand to fifteen hundred
pounds of bone dust per acre ; and to one, in
particular, who, in addition to a liberal coat of
barnyard manure, (such as would have satisfied
most of us) gave his wheat crop a top dressing
of derive hundred and $evcufj/-JlVC pound* a/'
homc-uiatfr,'s-uj}tr-l>h<>'i*]>/tatc }>er acre.
"Sonic of his old fashioned neighbors shake
their heads, say 'it won't pay.' 'can't stand it
lobq,J ito.. &c., but he has been carrying on in
the same place for several years, and can raise
crops which surprise those who kuow what was
taken off tho land before he come into poscssiuii
of it; and yet he says he docs not think he has
reached" tl'C amount which.will give the best in
terest for the amount invested."
Will not sonic of our planters make the ex
periment Upon a few acres ? Jt is as clear as
daylight, thai the money invested iu manure
not only repays in the increase of crops, but it
also adds to the intrinsic value of the land. It
is an investment that is never exhausted. Let
any planter try tin; experiment of making one
acre in the middle of tin- field yield double the
average of the bah neu of the field, and if he
cultivates that field for forty years without
manure, the same acre will, at'til 0 end bl that
time maintain its capacity of yielding double
the overage of the balance of the field.
