AGRICULTURAL, &C.
[communjcated.]
Mr. Editor : As a matter of interest to the
farmers, it may not be inappropriate to relate
ft fact which WAb communicated by a worthy
and reliable farmer of our District.
He says: "On seeing tho adverii?Sincnt of
Dr. E. J. Oliveros, that ono dollar's worth of
strychnine baited out to crows, would bo a sav
ing to the farmer of twenty bushels of corn,"
J was induced to try tho experiment. Accord-,
ingly, I purchased from him a vial of strych
nine and prepared it in the following manner:
Get some old vessel, something never more to
be used, put in it one quart of corn, add a
teaspoonful of strychnine, then pour upon it
warm water only sufficiently to cover the corn,
and stir well with a piece of stick; do this at
night, allowing it to remain until morning,
when it will be ready to be put about the field.
He goes on to state that "in thirty-six hours
after putting out. tho bait, quantities of dead
crowa, black birds and sundry other kinds
could bo seen on his soil, and scavenger buz- j
lards could bo seen in numbers feasting them
selves on their'carcasses." He has concluded
that this ono dollar expended, has saved him at
least ten bushels of corn. If you think this
worthy of publicity, you havo the privilege of
using it. INCOGNITO.
[Wo learn from a gentleman who has tried
tho.,above, that his corn fields were almost
destroyed by black birds, until ho adopted
f his remedy. In two days he counted 46 dead
tmcH in his fields, and ho estimates, he has
saved by its use; five acres of corn.?Ei>. O.

Circular to Land Owners.
s}JSo. Ca. Bureau op Immigration,
Charleston, 5th April, 18G7.
? To the Land-owners in South Carolina:
Gentlemen :?I tako the liberty to appeal
to your patriotism in behalf of tho recently
enacted-measures of immigration, at least to tho
patriotism of those among you who entertain
the opinion that an increase of population, in
dustry* Ancl Capital, will bo bonefloln.1 to tho
State.
It iswoll known that Europoau immigration
is now mostly flowing into tho West, whoro
cheap lands and many facilities and other in
ducements are olFcrod. In the new States,
public lands are yet to be had at a nominal
outlay, and a strangor going there need not for
a moment bo at a loss whero to looato, thou
sands of places being nlways for Hnle and rogis
t?rr his selection. With us it is different.
Alt; . l thcro may perhaps bo thousands of
place- r ?ale in South Carolina, no one can
kuow where to find thorn unless they are ad
vertised and registered in some well known and
accessible locality. For this the. Buftau of
Immigration has partly been established.
Without any charge whatever to the land
owner, his lands that ho can spare for sale, will
be registered and advertised in the best markets
of the world. Bat how can this be done, un
less you forward the information??Have you
no lands to spare ? If you have, put on a fair
and reasonable price, make the conditions of
payment as liberal as you can, describe their
location, capacities and advantages, and com
municate with this Bureau. It may be said,
"wo will Bell a portion of lands reasonable and
on fair enough terms, if a purchaser eomo."
But it must be remembered that no one can
know this, and besides, that the stranger will
be at a great expense, whilst in uncertainty
looking for lands, of whioh no one oan inform
him. Will he not rather go to a section of
country where no such delays and difficulties
need be encountered? And then again the
European immigrants that are looking for em
ployment, laborors, servants, mechanics, etc.,
of ovcry kind, where ore they to find it? In
your villages, on your plantations, do you
want a blacksmith, wheelwright, carpenter,
cabinet maker, saddler, shoemaker, tailor, etc.,
this Bureau will endeavor to supply you. But
you should say so?how else am I to know ?
It would never do to send such people tramp
ling about the country without an object. Do
you have any good positions for factories, which
you arc unwilling or unable to develop your
. selves, why should you not inform this Bureau;
therefore state their facilities and advantages,
their probable prospect of success, and the
terms of lease or sale ? Do you have valuable
mineral lands that you cannot realize for the
want of capital, why not enable me to endeavor
to do it for you ? It will cost you nothing.
I would respectfully but earnestly urge that
this matter receive a prompt consideration. If
there nro a few men in every district willing to
spend a few hours for the general good, let
them meet at a convenient place, let them
gather such information at they can, and thcu
inform this Bureau what is wanted for their
neighborhood and what can. be done there to
further the intentions of. the law; let them
say what laborers, servants, mechanics, etc.,
arc wanted or could find employment, and let
them fix upon a current rate of reasonable
wages for their district ; let thein endeavor
also to obtain information of such tracts of
lands, as *might be had for lease or sale, de
scribe their quality and value, and whatever
clso they may deem of importance. I most
respectfully, therefore, Bolicit the co-operation
of all public spirited men, more especially of
the members of the Legislature and the editors
of public journals. Under tho firm conviction
that immigration is one of the mast vital ne
cessities of tho State, and a sure means by
which a portion of our former prosperity may
bo soonest restored, I even take the liberty re
spectfully to solicit the honorable the Judges,
to bring thvs matter to tho attention of the
public in their charges to tho Graud Juries on
their circuits.
Bcspect fully,
JOHN A. WAGENER,
?Commissioner.
