MISCELLANEOUS.
Philadelphia has more citizens of African
descent than any other place in the country?
the present number reaching 28,000. They
support seventeen churches, worth 8225.000,
with a membership of 5440, and 1700 Sundtty
soholars. They have twelve or fifteen free
schools, with a daily average attendance 22000.
There are thirtj-four negroes in the city whose
combined wealth amounts to 61,358,000. The
richest man is Stephen Smith, a lumber mer
chant. He owns seventy.fivc houses in fee sim
ple, and is worth not less than 8300,000.'
Harris Lindsay, a bounty broker during the
war, is worth 8250,000. Five artists and a
number of excellcut musicians receive distin
guished mention. Among the latter is tho
"Blaok Swan." ?
Mr. B. M. Brawn, eighty-fours yea^s and a
resident of Dayton for the last thirty years, is
undergoing the process of voluntary starvation.
According to-thc Journal, ofthat city, he and
his family assert that he has taken no food
since the 28th of Fcbuary. He feels no pain
from his long fast, and asserts that he has no
appetite. He is reduced to a skeleton, expects
death, and is satisfied with tho expectation;
hut behoves that "guardian angels" have, by
some spiritual essence, protracted his life.
HUMOROUS .
[FOR THE ORANGEBURG NEWS.]
Boh Withers.
(i Whoa 1 Jim! what on airih are you a
roaring and taring about now, just subside now,
will you. Thar now, Mister, that arc horse is
jest a lectio of the best piece of horseflesh that
ever mashed clay in Spring-time?jest 5 years
old to a day, for Pap folded him, an he never
nmde but one mistake in breaking him, and
that thar was, that he lnrnt him to be too gen
tlclike and fond of the family. You see, M ister.
Pap had a homcsomish kind of a way about
him, as my Patsy says?and in a raising of
things thoy would naturally take after him.
That's tho way he coined to git inter that
Hcrnpe with Squire Morgan.? You see he went
to the 0, II. on special business, and thar, you
know, they let hogs an sich cattle stray
round town, to tho disgust ofjjthc citizens*
Whoa! Jim. An Pap he filled the dimijohn
an started homo?now you seo, Mister, right
thar Pap missed it, tho old fool, stond of letting
tho.store-keeper put a stopper in tho dimejohn
ho 'lowed as how he could hold the spirituous
fluid in with his thumb, an the consequence
was that Pap hadn't got five miles afore he was
so ovcrcoino that ho kinder had to git off his
horse, an in doing so spilt in tho road, what,
After examination ho found to bo about half of
the contents of tho dimejohn, mixed up kinder
promiscuously with fried eggs, ham, an mashed
potatoes. Whoa! Jim?jest stand still will
yon?seems like you never will gil done laugh
ing at Pap's persttiou a heaving iu the road
that day."
"But; Bob, tell us nhout tho scropo your
fathor got into with Mr. Morgan."
"Oh, yes! well, you see aller Pap had taken
n short nap of about .3 hours in the rain ho felt
a lcettlc better?but kinder obfusticated about
the head aud stomach, but howsomcver he ria
an Btartcd agin for home. Now, you know,
Mister, Squire MorgiMi, he lives on the 4 Notch
road, kinder up on the hill sorter like, with a
turnip patch jest on the right, which always
was notable for having good turnips in it.
"Well Pap says to himself, says he?'I wonder
if one of Squire Morgan's turnips wouldn't
help me'?an with that he puts down the bars
.an walks into the patch an pulls one an sits
down on a stump to cat it?an right thar agin
the dadrnttcd phi skunk overdid the thing for
instead of jest, eating the turnup an then leav
ing for home, he jest slid down rite side of the
stump an whistled,'hard times come agin no
more'?when Squire Morgan hears it an comes
to the door an says, Bays he?"Hollo I Mister"
Withors, (that's Pap) plcaso toll me what on
airth arc you a doing in my turnip patch a
whistling of 'Hard times come agin nn more'?
an with that he jest steps out in the road where
Paps' horse (that's Jim) was a standing, an
Pap'hc made, his way thar too, an then Squire
Morgan he says to Pap, says he. 'I saj Mister
Withers what* that you've got in that ar dime
john ? Says Pap, 'Vin-vin-egar, Squire.' 'An
Mister Withers whats that you've got in that
ar bag' says the Squire, 'why that's a pu-pu
pup form-ui-my son Bob,' says Pap. 'Why 1
never knew pups to grunt like a hog Mister
Withers,' says the Squire. 'Oh 1 that's a
nc-ne-ncw spc-spe.species,' says Pap. 'A new
species, laws alive! jest lets sec it, says the
Squire; wfcli that he cuts the string and out
drapt a leetle white boar pig. 'Why, Mister
Withers!'.says theSquirc. 'JeIT..u',lr,??'- Squire,'
says Pap, 4T sec how it is. Boh, (thats my son.) j
put some of my rais'-? corn 'm tnat nr Da?
au I noticed that same pig a nosing around it,
an I jest turned it wrong side out kinder like
an shook the grain outcn it, an laid it down to
tend to sonic important business, an when I
coined back it was a hangin on the pummel of
my saddle, and 1 think in it was the pup Bob
told me to fetch him, jest rid off with it.'
'.Well, now, that's all jest as clear as mud,' says
tho Squire. -I sold that pig with its mate to
Capt.Y-s. at the C. IL. for 20 dollars;
but jest tell nie, Mr. Withers, how that ar pig
got inter that ar bag. an bow that ar bag got
hitched to that ar pummel of that ar saddle?'
'Now you've got me, Squire,' says pap; with
out that ar pig" got to rooting inter that ar bag
for sonic more of that ar corn of my raising,
an turned it kinder rightside out, an couldn't
git out agin, an that ar notable family horse
thar, Jim, seeing the fix he was in, jest slung
him onto the pummel ofthat nr saddle.'
Whoa! Jim. You tarnation niischcvous
critter, you?whoa! I say, Mister, come out
an see us. Patsy'll make you a hoe-cake. Can't
go now. Well, como soon?good by. Now
Jitii show the gentlemen how you can travel.
G it up!
A Notorious Areu(rilotiuisl.
At the dejiot in Chicago, a few days since
there ? was great excitement over a traveler's
trunk. It seems that the baggage-master was
about to check it. when a voice within ex
claimed: .
"Let nie out or I will smother here!"
The baggage-master looked astonished for
awhile, when the voioo again exclaimed:
"Will you let mo out, or must I die in this
enclosure ?" ?
"Hold on, I will look up the owner," said
the baggage-master, and off he started in great
baste, and in the meantime a large crowd of
excited people had gathered around. He re
turned?the owner of tho trunk could not be
found: lie was about to break the lock, when
the voice quickly said:
"Oh, don't do that; you will kill me, Here
comes my master; but don't tell him I am
smuggling my way.''
At this juncture a gentleman stopped up and
claimed the trunk.
"Is this your property, sir?" said the bag
gage-master.
"Yes, sir, it is," replied the gentleman.
"Well, sir, you are smuggling a mau iu it."
',' A mau iu my trunk ! What do you
mean ?"
Voice in the Trunk.?"lie means I must get
out and pay my way."
(icnt/t man.?"llow came you in my trunk ?"
Voice.?"You put mc in here yotusclf to
avoid fare."
Gi.it.?"No, T did not."
Voice.?"You lie !"
Bogg?gc-m?kter.?"No use talking, sir; you
must open that trunk."
Gent.?Do you intend to insult me sir?"
Baggage-master.?"Not at all; but the trunk
must he opened."
Voice.?"Yes, for God sake, let me out?I'm
nearly dead."
Gaff.?"To gratify you and the crowd, I will
open the trunk."
While the owner was adjusting the key to
the lock, tho crowd gathered around with the
expectation of seeing a suffocated man ; but to
their great astonishment when the lid was
raised, the trunk contained nothing but the
wardrobe belonging to Don Juan the Ventrilo
quist, who perpetrated the trick.
Tho buggn^o-niastor took with a "sudden
.leaving," and the crowd shouted, "sold again."
"Sura," said Patrick, rubbing his bead with
delight at tho prospect of a present from his
employer, "1 always mono to do my duty."
"I believe you," replied his employer, "there
fore I niako you a present of all you have sto
len from mo during the. past, year."?"Thank
ycr honor," replied Pat "and may all your
friends and acquaintances tr?te you as liberally"
