The Bible. Who' composed the following description of he Bible we may never know: It was found in West-minster Abbey, nameless and date less : A nation would bo truly happy, if it were governed by no other laws than those of this blessed book. It so complete a s3'stoni that nothing can be added to it. It contains everything needful to be known or done. It affords a copy for a king, and a rule for a subject. It gives instruction to a senate, authority and direction to a magistrate. It cautions a witness, requires an impartial verdict of a jury, and furnishes the judge with his sentence. It sets the husband us lord of the household, and wife as rnisfcress of tho table?tells him how to.rulo, and her how to manage. It entails honor to parents, nud enjoins obedienee to ohildren. It prescribes and limits tho way of tho sover eign, the rule of tho ruler, and the authority of the master?commands tho subjectsto honor, and the servants to obey, and promises the pro tection of the Almighty to all that walk by its? rules. -It gives directions for weddings and burials. It points out a faithful and eternal guardian to tho departing husband and father?-tells him with whom to ieavc his fatherless children, and in whom his widow is to trust?and prom ises a father to tho former, and a husband to tho latter. ? It tenches a man to set his houso in order, and how to make his will; it appoints a dowry for his wife, and entails the right of the first born and slmws how tho younger branches shall be left. It defends the right of all, and reveals ven geance to every defaulter, ovcr-rcacher and op pressor. "It is the first book, the best book and the oldest book in the world. It contains tho choicest matter?gives the best instruction?affords the greatost pleasures and wttisfnetion that were ever enjoyed. It contains the best laws, and most profound mysteries that wero ever penned?it brings tho best of comforts to the inquiring and disconso late. It exhibits lifo aud immortality from ever ltt?tiug, and shows the way to glory. It is a brief recital of all that is to come. It settles all matters in debnto, resolves all doubts, and canes the mind and ooiiscicuco of all their scruples. It reveals tho only living and true Clod, and allows the way to him, and sots aside nil other gods, and describos the vanity of them, and all that trust in Buch ; in short, it is a book of laws, to show right and wrong; a book of wis dom, that condemns all folly and niake? the foolish wiso; a book of truth, that detects all lies and confutes till errors j and a book of lifo, that shows tho way from overlasting death. It contains the most ancient antiquities, strange events, wonderful occurrences, heroic deeds, pnparalleled wars. . It describes th?'celestial, terrestrial, aud in fcrUttl worlds, and the origin of the angelic myriads, human tribes, and dovilish legions. It will instruct the accomplished mechanic and the most profound artist. It toaches the best rhetorician, and exercises every power of the most skillful arithmetician, puzzles the wisest anatomist and exercises the wisest oritic. It is the best covenant that cvor was agreed on; the best docd that was over scaled; tho best evidenoo that over was produeod; the best will that was ever sigucd. To understand it, is to be wise indeed; to be ignorant of it, is to be destitute of wisdom. It is tho king's best copy, the magistrate's best rulo, tho houscwifo's best guide, the ser vant's best directory, nnd tho young man's best companion ; It is the schoolboy's spelling book, and the learned man's masterpiece. It contains a choice grammar for a novice, aud a profound mystery fur a sago. It is tho ignorant man's dictionary, and the wiso man's dictionary. It affords knowledge of witty inventions for the humorous, and dark sayings for the grave, and is its own interpreter. It encourages the wise,, the warrior, the swift the ovcrcomerj and promises an eternal reward to the excellent, the conqueror, the winner, and the prevalent. Aud that which crowns all is, that the author is without par tiality, nnd without hypocrisy? "In whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning." M I S C K L L A N E O U S . A Speedy Bargain. Paris is unusually gay. A great number of foreigners have already arrived, nnd are out shining the rest of the world in tho brilliant extravagances so much in vogue here. One of these new arrivals, Prince Nnriskinc, possessor of one of the groat fortunes which have caused tho Russian nobility to be received through Europe as the modern representatives of Alad dins and Fortunatuses, happening to dine a few evenings since with a friend who has built for himself a .small but most elegant and charm ing hotel, fitted up with all the appliances of fashionable luxury, was struck by the form of the surtout, in silver, which occupied the cen tre of the table. Having expressed bis admi ration of it as a work of art, ho was surprised to.find that his host seemed to hold it* in slight esteem. 'Tf you care so little about it why not sell it to me?" said Prince Nnriskinc. "The centre piece matches all the rest of of the silver," returned Count 1)., ''and I can't sell it to you unless you buy the rest of the service." "Very good, I'll buy the whole of it," re sponded the Prince. "Rut if you want the silver, you must take tho china also," said the Count. ?'Very good, I'll buy the china also," re plied the Prince. '?I can't sell you the china unless you buy the tables and chairs." said the Count. "I'll buy all the furniture of the room !" cried the Prince. Rut the furniture could not be sold without the stable, nor the stable without the horses, harness aud carriages, and all these, one after the other, the Prince declared himself ready to buy, but ou one condition. "Name it." said the Count. "It isthat if I make this purchase, the trans fer shall be effected this very evening, so that I may have the plcu.so.rc of sleeping to-night in my new purchase, and in your bed." "I accept your condition," replied the Count, who, having sent for bis steward, gave orders for the immediate removal of his wardrobe and personal effects, and the preparation of his bed room for the reception of the new master. The steward was then ordered to produce the plans aud bills of the architect who had con structed the hotel, the inventories of furniture, etc., and the receipts of the dealers of whom tho various classes of purchases had been made ; and after the Prince had gone through these, and had agreed with the Count to purchase the whole for four hundred thousand francs, a regidar bill of ?ale was drawn up and duly signed, and the Prince, drawing a roll of bank notes from his potfkct, counted out the amount fixed upon, and handed it to his friend across the dinner-table, which neither of them had quitted for an instant, during the progress of this eccentric proceeding. The two gentlemen then took a cup of coffee together, tho Prince duing the honors of the house, now become.Iiis own,, by pressing his guest to "take a second cup, " and the Count, after an hour's chat with the Prince, took his leave, aud went off to the rooms ho had caused to be taken for him at ai neighboring inn.?Paris Correspondence of the. Nation. HUMOROUS. She Would bo Married. One of our Justices of the Peace was called Oiif afternoon to go to a German house in the city, and marry a couple. Putting on a clean collar, and putting a marriage certificate in his pocket, he started for the festive scono. Ar rived at the house, under the direction of a blue-legged little, boy who pointed out the place, he knocked and went in, In the middle of the floor stood a stout German girl, rosy and plump, her eyes rolling out tears- ns large as butter-pats. "What's the matter ?" snid the sympathetic Justice ".Matter!" said tho girl; "dat Gotlicb wend off aud wouldn't marry j matter-enough, ain't The Justice said ho supposed it was, and and intimated that he had come to marry some one, and requested'the old lady to brine; on tho lambs to the sacrifice. Old lady said, 'Dare vos no lams?Ootlieb is run off, an' vil not marry my Katarina." "Well," Buid the justice, "Gotlieb isn't tho only mon there is?send for ?sonic other mail to marry her." At this Katariua's lace brightened up, and she ejaculated, "Yah?dat ish goot?send mit Unna." Hans was sent for, but couldn't come. When her messenger returned, Katarina, de termined not to give It up, said, ''Send niit Shosoph !" Shoseph was sent for but couldn't, bo found. Katariua's heart, fell at this news, aud the justice was growing impatient, just theu Katarina looked out of the window, and saw a short aud thick young German going by, when she rushed to the door and hallooed, "Fritz! Fritz'.!" Fritz shortly made his ap pearance at the door, when Katariua's mother said, "Fritz, you lol's mine Katarina?" Fritz allowed that he did, "better as sauer kraut." "Then Stand up here !" thundered the justice, aud bet?re Fritz could realize his posi tiou, he was a mau and wife, and Katariua's arms were around his neck, and her lips pressed to his, she commenced crying between the ca listhenics, "Mein husban'?mein Fritz."' Our duty as a correct historian, compels us to say that Fritz hugged back as well as h knew how. The justice, with head cruet, stopped smiling out, leaving the luvcrs to them selves, and walked away meditatively, a holy calm stealing all over his massive proportions, i the consciousness of having done his duty gleaming in his eye, and honor, honesty and rectitude in his footsteps.
