1 HAMPTON PEOPOSES TO ORGANIZE DEMOCRATIC CLUBS. At Chief for South Carolina of the National League of Democratic Clubt Hi Will Oryanixe for Victory if Democrat* lFi>A ft. The Kdi'or of The State 1ms received the following letter from Gen. Wade Hampton : Washington, D. C , Oot. 81, 1893. My Dear Sir : Some days ago you called attention through your paper to the fact that 1 was Vice President of the National Association of Democratic clubs, and since then I have sem in seTornl of our democratic papers refereuco made to your stnteuient, and in one instance the question was asked why no action had been taken by myself. 1 have waited to ascertain the views of the Democratic press of South Carolina, for these papers represent, in my opinion, the only true Democratic sentiment of the State. I aim una senttmout should be expressed by what are c?llcd the Conservative papers. My own judgment is clear, that the time baa come when the line should be drawn between those who eland on the Ocala platform and those who stand on that of the National Democracy. No man who upholds the former can claun properly to be a Democrat, and ucless our people choose to support the fallacies of the Oeala adherents or to be led into the Populist party, the true Democrats of the State should orgairze to maintain the principles of the Democratic party as sot forth in the Chicago platform. If my Democratic fellow citizens agrco with me that this is the true policy to be I adopted, I shall at once procoed to organize Na'ional Democra'io Clubs throughout the State, and I shall exert ray utmost efforts to keep the Slate where it properly belongs, j in lho great Democratic column. I I believe that this can bo done, for our people will scarcely now ia the hour of victory, forsake the flag they followod so J| steadfastly and so faithfully when that flag J went down in defeat. Unscrupulous demaj gogucs have, by fal-e promises, misled many < of our roost honest men, and they have brought shame upon our proud State. % 1 still have abiding faith in the men who I followed the starry cross through trials and carnage; who bore, with the heroism of mar1 tyrs, the sufferings of the reconstruction era, | and who with a devotion and pluck never \ surpassed, rescued the State in '70. A Oibi/s Nsw Jaw.?A remarkable surgi^ cal operation, illustrating the udTancemciit M of medical ecience, says the Boston Journal, has just been performed on Miss Daisy BedI well, the sixteen-year-old daughter of Mr. % and Mrs. J. J. Bedwell, of Yazoo City, Miss. The operation was conducted by Dr. Frank Hartley, consulting surgeon at Roosevelt V hospital, and Dr. George Howe Winkler, professor of operative dentistry at the New I York dental sohool. r Dr. Winkler, to whose attention the case I was brought in the first instance, said that | he learned upon inquiry that when the girl I was four and a half years old she lost alE most the entire lowor jaw on the right side by necrosis, due probatdy to a blow or a fall; > which fracured the booc so that it came ^ f away aim "St entirely by the sloughing of 5 sthe tissues of the uevk under t'ue angle of the jaw and very li'tle through surgical in Vterfercneo. B it Dr. Winkler found, on examination, that V '^pie periosiintn had finally filled up with a Ifhen growth of bone, which did not grow any longer than a four and-a-half-year-old child's should be. The development of the jaw on the other side was natural. The effect was to push the chin round under the right check. Dr. Winkler, believing that if the new growth of bone was sawn through it would be possible to force the chin around in front of the face and hold it there permanently, advised an operation, which was performed by Dr. Hartley, lie made an incision in the neck, under the angle of the .jaw, sawing the bone in two. Two hard rubber appliances, one on each jaw. were inserted and fastened to their respective teeth. These appliances brought the chin into its normal position by an arrangement of floss silk ligatures and were allowed to E remain in position four weeks, while the ex ternsl wound was healing. when the external wound was sufficiently healed the work of inserting the permanent appliances was begun. This was done by sol lering upon the lower jaw an upright bolt, which slid up and down on a gold bar soldered to the upper, allowing the jaws perfect freedom to open and close, but retaining the lower jaw perfect in (tie new position to wh;ch it had been brought. Tha operation is regarded us highly successful, and the good results obtained are pretty sure to be permanent. Miss Bedwell and her mother left this city for their home today, and the young girl was as happy ns if she had inherited a fortune, for she is [now a very pretty young woman. Speaker Crisp said besides tho tariff bill H the House would come to a vote on the bill to take off the ten per cent, tax on State banks. Mr. Crisp said the Democrats might lose afew votes in some sections of the South on account of the repeal bill, but ho did not R| think it would amount to anything serious, I as the South generally believed in tho Demo\ erotic party.
