sect of laying out a portion of the roadv
way of Spring street with the cinders of
^pyrites. This experiment, which was attempted
on a very small scale, proved a
great success, and now the department is
repeating the operation in Archdale street
between Queen and Clifford streets.
The cinden are obtained from the
phosphate works adjacont to Charleston,
*&d when mixed properly form a chemical
compound that is hard and durable.
The roadway in Spring street that was
laid oat in pyrites cindcts have proved a
k grt&', suecess, and it is anticipated that
the hew venture will prove the satno.

in laying the roadbed, and when
it is properly stamped down the cinders

Negroes Try to Lynch a Negro.
Charleston, 8. C.?Edward Smith
(colored) committed an outrage on Emma
Donna, also colored, at Ten-Mile Hill on
Monday last. The man was arrested
and taken to Summerville, where he is
now in jail. An attempt was made by a
score of negroes to lynch him, but the
mob was driven off by the white officers,
who had him in charge -
