Tub A9sm?smbnt or I'ropirtt.?The
I utilization of taxation, which seems to be 11
o grratty desired by many, can bo brought k
about wuvu all prop?r.y is assessed at ita L
market value. That will require stocks end t
taxub e bonds to be assessed at the price b
which they briug. The average quotations d
can. bo taken far six months preaesding the I
assessment. That wou'd add a cansiderab'e b
amount to ilie taxable property. Then lot s
lands be put up ti their real value, and t
inatetdof having them entered on the tix I t
books at $3 to $tt an aore they would stand (i
at $7 00 to $20.00 according to looation and i
value, and the improvements on them. Hor- j
res, mules and cattle should be put at tbe 1
rash price. It'oue owns a $.10.00 milch cow
sr a $150 mule put it down at tho real value.
Then, when all property is returned, let the v
owner rendsr*in an account of the notes and n
mortgacrs aicaiost him so that it ran ho da- s
de luote 1 from his agreement. If one owns f'
tract of land worth $5,000 and owes $*2,000, a
lot Dim pay on $3,000, for that is all he is P
worth , Trial would equalize matters and '
at the satnc lime not increase the nmouut u
of taxes to bo raised. It is very certain that l1
banks and other corporations will not object C
to tli'B pinii. Their tuxee would be reduced '
abont one-fourth, while the ownerj of land 1
and farm stock would pay a littlo more,
because there is so much land in the county
that the inerrasc in assessments would bring \
about increased taxation oven at a lswer T
tate. Let our next legislature make an e
arrangement to equalize the assessment of It
property and they will do a good work.? s
