The nineteenth cen'ury lias been marked
by the mireclcs which have been wrought in
the subjugation of the-powcrs of nature to
the uses of the human race; but in this
rr.-peot the next hilf century, or perhaps
quir er century, will have no precedent. It
will distinguish itself more than any other
911 responding period of the world's history
by groat aud practical applications of science.
In fact every science will undergo a
complete revolution in this space.
Within the memory of some of our older
0-tize s, persous, correspondence and merchnnd
se were transport I from place to
place by stage coich-s and wagons. Then
the fast coaches with its team of fine horses
and its potnpous driver, who handled the
reins with con sua mate pride and skill, was
a subject of tlie unbouudc i admiration of the
traveler. The rapid circulation of intelligence
was also a twist of those times. How
pernios stared, and some even feit irresistibly
impelled to inquire further into matters,
when told tint the morning papers, still
damp fro u the press, were read that day at
the distaucc of twen'y miles from the places
where published. At that I'm", if viie
versed in the its trees of science had gravely
pre lifted that the generation living then
and there would live to see all these wonderful
performances become obsolete at.il e?usigned
to the history of the past; that tiuic
would become iconoclastic, breaking up
their idols, such as fast caches, making
their celerity such as to satisfy those alone
who were iu a backward state of civilization,
the populace would have thought that the person
who gave utterance tisucb, was laboring
under severe mental derangement, for it

? - -- -- .. wp.ivn..
Since the beginning of the nineteenth
century, I'iof. Samuel F. 15. Morse, has
brougtit into use the electro-magnetic telegraph
by means of whicU electricity, at the
will and pleasure of those in charge, inav
deliver messages at any pail of the worlo,
and transmit answers to such messages
almost instantaneously. A telegraphic despa'ch
wid tly in any times around the cirth
between the two beats of a com mm clock.
In its wildest Right the most exalted imagination
would not have dared, even in fiction,
t) give uttcmicc to these stubborn realities.
Shakespeare only ventured to make his faiiy
'Put a girdle round the earth,
In forty minutes.'"
To Lave encircled it several times in a
scrond would have seemed too monstrous,
oven for "Robin Goodfellow."
Another thing that has excited the admirngjkon
of the world and is the pridt and boast
ITf our couutry and times, is the rapid transit.
At the present time a journoy from the Atlantic
seaboard to the shores of the Pacific,
a distance of thirty-six hundred miles, can
bo accomplished in about six days which, as
recent as 1819, required many months of
weary travel for its accomplishment.
To chronicle the constantly increasing Ijst
c#f wonderful app'ianccs would require an
octavo volume in itself, 60 we will confine
ourselves to tho wonders which will mark
the next quarter century and perhaps be
m ire striking than the old "seven wonders
of the world."
la 1-ss tbau twenty-five yours Union and
Chester will bo brilliantly lighted with
electricity, gcuc.atcd at Lockliart Shoals, and
shafting will not be used in any ol' the large
factorits which, it is predicted, will be m
cpnation at tint time at the above named
pilots. Electricity will entirely take its
place. Shaftings, it is said, wastes 40 per
cent, of the power when they are doing the
work, and in the intervals, when they arc
not at work, there is complete loss. Electricity
is instantly available, and can be turned
off and on in a moments time. In using
stciiu power the basements of the buildings
have to po occupied by huge cugines which
shake the buildings, and further necessitate
great inc-mveuicnco in coaling and removing
ashes. In using olectrici'y a power plant
outside of the city could supply power to
dynamo*, which occupy but little space.
Already railroads arc doing away with
switch engines, substituting in their place
electric motors aud trolleys. Some one has
predicted that in ten years all the main
trunk line railrads will be operated by
electricity, the power in many c^ses coming
from waterfalls along the routes.
Ptrli ipa it will provoke smiles of incredulity,
when I predict that within the time
already mentioned a person in any part of
this country of ours can converse, by means
of a telephono cable, with persons in Liverpool
or in any other part of England, with a
perfect annihilation of all relations between
time and space In a very short time freight
of all kinds will be transported from one part
of the country to another through pneuuiatio
tubes, by menus of comprecscd ar,
thus, iu a great measure, doing away with
freight trains. The ni di ivls.. will be distributed
tb?oiighout the country through
these tubos.
No doubt within twenty-live years the
great inventive genius of America will have
contrived means by which an individual in
any town or city of our couutry will be able
to take in his hand a pencil or pen, the
^^poim of which is in another town, no matter
' how distant, and with pen or pencil, write
or delineate iu such distant place, such
characters or designs as might nlcase him.
Willi us much proiripiitu<lc ami precision us
if the p..pei to wliiv.h the characters were
committed, lay upon the Ub'e before him.
'd'lie contemplation of these things will have
nice ine so interwoven with our habita that
fum.liaiiiy will have blunted the edge of
wonder. Scitooi, Oirl.
