Plant Less Cotton?But Mork Corn.?
The Maunfacturer?, Record has stated that
the mutter of planting less cation and taking
more foodstuffs is in the hands of Southern
business men. They can eontrol it better
than the planters. It is reported from
Savannah that the faotora and commission ?
merchants of that city will require farmers y
to whom they make advances to re luce their C
eotton acreage. This should be done in r
e*ery county in ths South. A tuggestiou p
jgw h?s beeu made by Mr. A. B. Sbepperson of
New York, that the factors combine to re- n
quire a reduction of 10 per cent, in the acre- v
age, and that this be put In corn. It would p
be well if n larger reduction should be de- f
mended. The prosperity of Southern firmera
rests with tho business men who make s
advances. Will they rise to the occasiou
and by prompt and vigorous steps secure
the planting of cotton and the diversification
of Southern agriculture. Less ootton will
not accomplish the desired results unless it
is accompanied by an increase in the produc- ,
tionr.fcorn, wheat, oats. boss. etc. The I
Southern farmer win diveraifioi his produc- j,
tlons and makeB cotton a surplus crop, rare- ^
Ij fails, while the farmer who raises all cot- ^
