surrounded them. Nobody wua allowed
to approach them or speak to them. The
constabulary formed two double linos on

"Forward, inarch," was given, and the
regular tramp of the troops echoed down
the hard road.
Theu an officer of the law went to the
ruined house, picked up a picco of
hrokcu slate aud a handful of the earth
near tho house. He went inside to see
that tho firo was trampled out, because if
u spark of firo is left alive the eviction is
not ooaiplcte. He searched the house to
see that 110 domestic animal was Inside.
A dog is a domestic animal and if left
inside of the houso invalidates the eviction
; a cat is looked on by this wise law
as a wild animal and does not matter.,

who is in America, built with his own

land.

The number of suicides occuring in
New York City during the year endiug
December 31, 1890, was 239, of which
number 190 were men and forty-nine
were women. Of the former 141 ware
of foreign birth and forty-niuo were
1 nativo born, while of ihe women twentyeoven

were native born. Theso figures
i show that of the total number of suicides
for the year, 168 were of foreign nativity
and only seventy-one were natives of tho
United States. The total number of
suicides for 1890 is less thau the number
for tho year 1888 or 1889, and only a
little more than for tho year 1886 or
1887. When the increase in population
between 1886 and 1890 is taken into account
the fable shows there has been a
decrease in suicides during the lust iive
years. A monthly avorage for tho last
five years shows tho greatest number of
suicides to have o:curred during April,
the smallest number during August. For
April the average number is 23.G and for
August it is only 16.4." Thetcndcncy to
commit suicide is greater in men than in
women, and during tho five years under
consideration tho ratio docs not fall bolow
one to threo in favor of the worneu.
A comparison of statistics for 1887

of preference by males was shooting,
