I rha'l not be ab'e to attend and address the matting as you request, but I am glad that the business interests of New York are at la*t to be heard on the subject. It surely cannot be necessary for me to make formal expression of my agreement with those who believe that the greatest p-iri s would be initiated by the adoption of the scheme embraced in the measure now pending in Congress for an unlimited coinage of silver at our mints. If we have developed an unexpected rapacity for the assimilation of a largely increased volume of currency, and if wo have demonstrated the usefulness of such an increase, these conditions fall far short of insuring us against disaster if in the present situation we enter upon the dangerous reekioss experiment of free, unlimited and independent silver coinage. Resolved, That the proposed debasement tf our currency is dishonost. It will impair private and publio credit, it will coofuse nnd hamper our commercial relations with gold paying countries, it will curtail legitimate Irusinoss, it wi>l violate the obligations of existing contracts nnd disastrously afl[cct enany industries. It will fall with peculiar severity on depositors in saviogs banks and trust companies, and those holding life and mutual benefit policies. It will lesscu the purchns ng power or money In which are paid the earnings of laborers, and of the salaried classes.
