Bonham to go to Cincinnati, and Attorney General Tope immediately suggested the propriety of wtiting some such letter, showing that Gen. ltonham was nut under surveillance, atul lio inferred that Col. Aldrich, who was acting f >r Gen. Bouham, wished the letter wri ten. The publicity of Gen. Honhnm's reply oouies from Gen. Bonham, the governor not re< eiving the letter until to-day. '1 lie givernor thinks that his courtesy and consideration have been wasted. It is well-known [Jp that the sheriff had Geo. Alfred Aldrioh called at this olfico to-day and desired to make (he following .statement relating to the circumstances under which the letter to Gen. Bonhani was written by Governor Tillman : ' There is no foundation whatever for the statement nvido by Governor Tillman that 1 acquiesced in any request that he extend permission to Gen. Bonhani to l^nvc the State. I heard no such request made by Gen. Tope, and do not boliove that ho made U* After paying Mr. Syiumcrs for his services and icceiving a receipt therefor, 1 rose to leave the Execmivc Chamber, saying, '1 believe there is nothing else to be done, nud will go.' Governor Tillman eaid, 'wait a moment,' and began writing. After writing a short time lie called his sccretaiy, and handing him a sheet of paper said, 'Copy that.' Alfred Aldneh nppenrcd before Governor Tillman and informed him that the money was ou dc posit in the Lout an 1 Kxchange bank. The governor had the money transferred to the Carolina bank, and on Col. Aldrich's presenting a telegram from the home oilicc of the Union Central Insurance company of Cincinnati, asking Gen. llonham to be there Monday evening to attend a meeting of the b ard cf directors, the governor informed him that Gen. llonhani was at liberty to go wherever he chose, and at the roqucst of Gen. llonham the Governor furnished him the following letter : Dear Sir:?"The shortage in your accounts as adju'ant and inspector general having been made good, and the state sufl'crcd no lo?s by your act, yon are at liberty to leave the state if you so desire." 11. 11. Tillman. The amount deposited by Gen. llonham covers protest, fees and enough to pay for the services of the expert who overhauled the accounts, in addition to tlio shortage. This is probibly the end of the matter. The governor states he sees no reason for any criminal prosecution, and that lie believes tbe sentiment of the State does not demand it.? Charleston World.
