Dens left home about daylight and shortly
Mrs. Peas was horrified to see

went to her bureau, got a pistol, covered the
negro with if ami ordered him to get out and
stand up. which he did. She then called
one of her little children ami sent him to
the nearest neighbor, about half a inile distant,
for help. While waning for the neighbors
to come, she made the negro go into

things keeping hiin covered with the pistol

A Narrow Escape
At Miss Eliza A. (tamer's school, one
mile South of Skull Shoal*, Monday morning,
while Martha Knox, one of the scholars
was standing by the side of the fire-place her
dress took fire and was nearly half bume l ff.
The vest of the girls ran out of the house
with flight. The teacher stood in the dcorway
and directed the boys to put out the
fire, which they did almost instantly, with
their hands and a bucket of water. Several
of the echolars had their hands slightly
