Lbxinutox gets Him.-Columbia, S. C., April
2 -Wjllie Lcaphavt n young mulatto, who was
convicted of the heinous crime of outraging
a respectable white young Lady in Lexington
County, and sentenced by -ludge Wallace to
be hung last Friday, but who was respited
by the Governor until tho 7th. of May, and
removed to Hichbmd County jail, upon the
recommendation ol" Judge Wa'lapc, in consequence
of an affidavit presented to him by
Lcaphart's attorney, was taken back to Lexington
jail last Saturday. A committee of
Lexington citizens appointed at thu meet,
ing yesterday, visited the Governor to-day.
. They stated that they could not understand
his action in secretly ordering. Lcaphart's
reprieve and removal to Columbia after hq
had publicly declined tqtiarUon him'. 'I'M?
Governor^ u?^*eesed *them he had no
alternative but ' to suspend sentence, when
Judge Wallace recommended it for the purpose
of allowing a motion for a new trial by
reason of an affidavit wlucli contained material

of the court, but his granting of tiie judge's
recommendation for a reprieve was obligatory.
The committee then had an interview with
the judge and informed him that tliey desircd
the return of the prisoner to Lexington,
And thnt they stood ready pledged to his personal
safety. The .lodge then commended
them for their sentiments and gave them a
recommendation to the Governor for the rc
turn of Lcnphnrt, in which the Governor
* acquiesced.
The cimmittec pledged their honor as
gentlemen for the personal safety of Leaphart,
and after an order for his delivery was
signed l>y the Judge he was taken to Lexington
by the committee, who left the city this
