PRODIGALITY.
Mr. Editor and Brothkr.?Much has
beeu said about buying cheap grods; oud
many of our membera seem to think cheap
f.ods the panacea for all our financial cmbarraosmenls.
But it will lake sometbiog
besides cheap goods to elevate the farmer to
that stale of financial independence aimed
at by our organization.
How not to buy goods is equally, yos, more
uipjimiib inuu euenp gouts. uur wuigtnary
necessities make up the greater part
of our wants, and I am often reminded
of the oil but true provorb, that "any
fool enn make money, but it takes a wise
man to kuow how to koep it."
Some one has ^snid that "cheap goods
means ; and for many Alliance men this
is only too true.
Stop, brother farmer , as you and 1 are
wishing to better our condition financially,
to educate, refine and elevate cur childrcu'
socially, to make "farming more attractive
and country life less lonely," lot us examine
our last year's accounts, and see if- we
oan't find many things that we could have
don* without. Many of (ho unnectuary
artiolcs you purchased mny have cost but
little?only a few cents?yet, if you take
your pencil and cross every one you bought
that was uot particularly needed, and
could have let alone, you will be surprised
by adding up their sura total. Look at a
largt per cent, of your last year's purchases
that were not an absoluto necessity.
And why was this useless expcndiluro of
money T Why did you buy litem? Simply
beoauso, in many cases, they wcro so cheap.
My brother, auytbing bought that could
have been as well let alone, is dear, no matter
how choap. And 1 tell you piaiuly,
before we accomplish our mission as a body,
wo will have to learn to buy less as well as
cheap.
Now, brother farmer, can't you cut down
your accounts least ten per cent, this yoar 7
I am ready to assert that the majority of
uft ten, and never will feel tho difference
so ^eat as like when wo go to scttlo up.
Have you got nearly enough cash to run
' you this year 7 See if you can t make it
wholly enough. Try to do what the Bible
,^BStells you : "Owe no man anything, but proy
vide things honest in tho sight of all men."
New, let us look to the farm aud see if
We have not been prodigal of the means
that might have made our farms nioro productive
and remunerative. Do we economise
our time 7 Do wo perceive that our
time has a real oash value 7 Do we pro'cct
r Our farms with ditches, breakers nod terraces,
from tho destructive rains that sometimes
fall and wash the soil from tho farms
of the improvident, leaving only gullies
worn in the clay 7 Now, how much have
_ity6u lost by neglecting those things 7
. . , -Wj Do you know Hint it i* sai l that the value
' the fertilizers allowed to go to wusto on
BT" * the farms of the 8outh far exceed tho worth
my brother, of letting that much go to
PL Now, uty brother 'farmer, "ut the beginning
cf another year, let us do ou loss,
coming down to hard faro if needs bo, doing
more ourselves, and depending less on
thers. And with a generous earth beneath
us, and a kind Heaven above us, if we are
only true men, success and happiness is
assuredly ours. J. C. O.
J0NE3VILLE TO THE FBONTWill
tho days of wonders never cease 7 The
uise and praiseworthy resolutions passed
for 1890, by the Joncsvillc Alliance and published
lost week sounds quite different front
Joncsvillc a few years ugo. And the casual
Visitor will find that Joncsvillc lias become
a quiet little christian village, with Sabbaths
and churches, and that the farms around
are occupied by an industrious, orderly and
law-abiding people. And now, my tiroUiran,
the* only reminder of the former iniquity of
JWtT town is the old hound deg?, the tmiHng<lnrkoys
and a few "pale faces" that seem
loth to yield to the mighty powers of education
and morality, uml that are still seen to
linger around the old haunts of their former
iniquities. And 1 advise you to shumo the
ft - "'pile faces" fsr loafing ; give remunerative
^employment to the "brother in black,"
run the dogs, off and your little town and
,^^jhrrounding country will bo second to none,
* Tili that makes a community happy and
j "^^rospcrous.
"DON'T YOU REMEMBER 1"
Brethren, our county Alliance last September
passed a resolution authorizing each subAlliance
to appoint a corresponding secretary
to report to the Alliance department. Hut,
where are my correpondingassistants? Brethren,
your "lights are under a bushel," and
you seem to be asleep. 1aui gla. I thut Helton
has aroused her representative at last, au*l
tie speaks this week, in the Alliance column,
to the point. 1 esteem, you brethren,
of the Keltou Alliance very highly for
your tworks sake. I would l'eel it an
honor to lift my hat in recognition to your
true men. Anil why can't the other Alliances
\ arouse up and tell us of their moorings
, through their corresponding Secretaries.
I don't think it meet or proper for the
Allianco Editor to monopolize the cntiro
column with his editorials. It,should be
his duty chiofly to revise and correct all communications
intended for the Alliance department.
, And 1 ask you, brethren, to do your
'duty to your Editor. Lot each Allianco sord
in a message, at loast once a month, and fftat
y%a -wlll give about four to speak each wcok. 1
