COTTON. Our cotton crop should be the surplus mul not the principal crop. Observation tenches us tliM the farmers who make cotton a secondary nnd not a primary crop, have been the most prosperous. I was surprised at the Ugic of the cotton buyer at the factory, last when expostulated with for not offering more than 0.75 for cotton, who replied, "cotton ought to l?c the same price as meat, end meat is ouly GJcts." The farmer that wallows such logic as that, is not worth six and a quarter cents as a man. It costs us ton cents a pound to make cotton, nnd we ought to get locts for good cotton: nnd then our dividend would not be proportionate with the manufacturers. Let the cotton mills give us a better price for cottoir, and ask more for their goods, il needs be, and then, as we use only a very Finn11 per ceiu <?i iiivguuur* iuikk- *?? cotton we would have more money to buy the necessaries of life. 1 can't see the necessity of the fluctuations in price of cotton that is daily taking place at these factories. Their poods remain at th* same price. The only cause I cau give for these daily fluctuations, is the speculation, (or ratlict bets nnd gambling) that is going on in such places as Wall street. These factories, knowing the amount of cotton they must have, and the price they are going to ask for tlicit goods, take every advantage of the little "drop-oflfs" of those speculators, and then the poor farmer suffers.
