17.?The prospect for a cotton factory at
thie place ie now almost a certainty, as only
a few thooAnd dollars more are necessary
to insure success. Our monied men are
moving in concert now for the first time
since the subject has been agitated. After
a canvass or the town about $13,000 has
been raised and the remaining $7,000 it is
thonght can be easly aeeured in the surrounding
country. This amount will secure the
m chatter for incorporation, and the stockholders
will proceed to organize at once and put

Aug. 17.?The Court this morning sentenced
John L. Sullivan totwelvo months imprisonment.
Fitxpalrick, the referee, pleaded
guilty and was fined two hundred dollars.
A Scene of Horror in New Yobk.?New
York, At?g. 19.?Fire broke out early this
inerning in the five-story brown stone tenement
house in Seventh avenurc, while all
the tenants, about sixty, were in bed. The
flamos spread so rapidly that before rescue
arrive, they could escape, nine persons
lost their lives and two were injured.

the roads throughout tho county,
between the 1st and the 10th day of September;
and wc further give notice to Road
Overseers that they will bo held to a strict
account for any negluot of duty, and for all
bad work on the roads.
Some overseors already oiler the excuse
that the roads are too hard to work, but
such excuse will not ha received, for surely
the roads have been soft enough the past
two months, aud Ovcrsocrs should have
taken' advantage of the favorable condition.
We mean business, and we ineau to have
good roads in Uniou County, if the law will
give us the power to have them put iu good
condition.
