"Woe be unto him that potteth the bottle fo bis neighbor's lips," is a divino warning, and when wo lioense or sanotion the sale of Intoxioeting drinks we nre guilty before high heaven. Since we hare formed ourselves into au k Alliance, with the professed determination f . to better our own and our ohildren's oonditlon and the oondltiou of our neighbors, and onr neighbors' children, let us "using seal ocoording to knowledge," be faithful to our snored obligation, and rise upas one man against ibis great evil, the sale and use of ardent spjrltsMay every truo man that belongs to Unlou Countjr Alliance catob up and echo bask with stentorian voios that God-given word tbat like a mighty wave is now sweeping ever the minds and hearts of the friends of humanity?"Prouibitio.v. Facts and Fiuubes tor Farmkbs..?Mr. J. E. MoLondon, of Qeorgia, gives the fol lowing facts and figures to the^ Atlanta Journal conoorning the value of ootton and jute bagging, and the groat advantages to be gained by the use of ootton bagging ins'.ead of jute. He says: If tho ootton crop of 1889 is as large as that of 1888 , 49,000,000 yards of bagging will be required to wrap the orop. If the ootton is wrapped in jute, $4,900,000 will pass out of tho planters' bands. If the orop ie wrapped in cotton bagging $4,900,000 will remain insido the lines of the ootton Slates to be added to the circulating medium. The making of 49,000,000 yards of colten begging will consume 100,000 bales of ootton, which deoreases the number of bales for market and enhanoes the value of the ? ... ? ... remainder \ oent per pound, making the gain to the ootton planters $8,028,000. The J. R. Adams faotory can put a balo of oetton into Us spinning room for $6,77 leas than it oan be laid down in Lowell., Mass. If the cotton was spun in the 8outb, $47, 890,000 would be saved in frioght charges, eto. A better day is comiog. for in 1887 the product of the Southern ootton mills was $48,000,000 against $21,000,000 in 1880. It ia a fact worthy of strong emphasis that ootton mills are increasing more rapidly in the South than anywhero else. Common sonso will at no distant day compel the spinning of raw material where It oan be done tho ohenpest. Kkepthr Old Hkns.?It nevor pays to sell the hens as long as they are laying eggs enough to pay for all expenses, as the culling out from the flook of the not desirable should be done as late in the season as possible, though it would not be unwise to get rtd of tho broken down or over-fat lions at any time. Keep every lion that moults early, for they will finieh the process and be ready fer laying before oold weather. uu nut uousru a nen oeoauso BOO is Old, ir h? is ft good layer. It will make no differ- ! eooe to you how old she is as long as she is profitable. Wo havo known hens to 1*7 well until they were seven or eight years old. There is no truth in the old theory? for theory it is only?that a hen is of but little value After she is two years old. We < have seen hsns six And soven years old that laid as many eggs in a year fts the youngor ones, And often exceeding them. An old hoa that has provod profitable should be used as a brooder for the purpose of producing pullets, as living to old ago also indioates hardiness. Keep an aooount of the gg? r reived, observe whioh hens are the best layers, in summer as well as in winter, And then carry over for next year, for , in that way the flock will beeome better very season.
