Some of the most learned and successfu
of the medical profession assert that alca
' holic liquors are not needod as remedies.
"Woe be unto him that pulteth the botif
to his neighbor's lips,'' is a divine warning
and when wo license or sanction the sale o
intoxicating drinks we are guilty befor
high heaven.
Since we have formed ourselves into a
jg. Alliance, with the professed detcrminatioi
to better our own and our children's condi
tion and tho condition of our neighbors, nm
our neighbors' children, let us "using zee
according to knowledge," bo faithful to ou
acre J obligation, and rise up as one ma:
against this groat evil, the sale and use o
ardent spirits.
May every true man that belongs t
Union County Alliance catch up and ech
back with stcutorian voice that God-givei
word that like a mighty wave is mow sweep

Facts anu Fiutmss for Fabmkbs..?Mr
J. it. Mcheudon, of Georgia, gives the fol
lowing facts and figures to the Atlanta Join
nal concerning the value of cotton aud jut
baggiug, and the great advantages to b
gained by the use of cotton baggiug insion
of jute. He says:
If tlic cotton crop of 1889 is as large a
that of 1888, 49,000,000 yards of baggin
will bo required to wrap the crop.
If tho cotton is wrapped in jute, 54,900,
000 will pass out of tho planters' bands
If the crop is wrapped in cotton bagginj
$4,900,000 will remain inside the lines o
the cotton States to be added to the circulat
ing medium.
Tlio making of 49,000,000 yards of coltei
bagging will consume 100,000 bales of cat
ton, which deoroasos the number of bale
for market and enhances the value of th
remainder } oent per pound, making th
gain to the cotton pluulors $8,025,000.
The J. K. Adams factory can put a bal
of cotton into its spinning room for $0,7
less than it can be laid down in Lowell.
Mass.
If the cotton was spun in the South, $47
390,000 would be saved iu frioght charges
Dole.
A better day is coming, for in 1887 th
product of the Southern cotton mills was
$48,000,000 against $21,000,000 in 1880.
It is a fact worthy of strong cmphani
that cotton mills aro increasing more rapid
ly in the South than anywhere else.
Common sense will at no distant da;
compel the spinning of raw material whor
it can bo done the cheapest.
IvKer the Old Hens.?It never pays tc
sell the liens as long as they are layiiij
eggs enough to pay fur all expensos, as tin
culling out from the (lock of the not deslra
ble should bo done as lata in the season a
possiblo, though it would not be unwise t<
get rid of the broken down or over-fat lion:
at any time. Keep every lien that moult
0 early, for they will linish the ^roecss am
be rcadv for lavini? before cold weather
Do not discard a lien because sho is old, i
she is a good layer. It will make no differ
encc to you how old sho ia as long as sho i
profitable. We have known lions to la;
well until they wore seven or eight year
old. There is uo truth in the old tlioory?
for theory it is only?that a hen is of on
little value after she is two years old. \V
have seen liens six and sevcu years old tha
laid as many eggs in a yearns the youngc
ones, and often excoeding them. An oic
hen that has proved profitable should b
used as a breeder fir the purpese of pro
ducing pullets, as living to old age also in
dicatcs hardiness. Keep an account of tli
eggs received, observe which hens arc tli
best layers, in summer as well as in win
tor, and then carry over for next year, fo
in that way the flock will becomo bctlc
every season.
