I A meeting of the members of (lie Bar of
I Union was held June 29.
I Col. I. G. McKissick was called to the
I Chair and 8. 8. Stokes requested to sot as
Secretary.
The Chairman stated the objeot
of the meeting was to draft suitable
resolutions on the death of Judgo ROBERT
MUNRO and have them presented to the
C nrf. ?
On motion of T. ^B. Butler, Col. I. G.
McK ss ck, Mnj. D. A. Townsend and C. C.
Culp, Esq , wore appointed a committee to
draft visible resolutions on the death of
tatt Muuro and present them to
^ftmorning sossion of the Court
Col. MoKisslok presented
i evolutions, accompanied by
some very fueling remarks, and'asked that
they be spread upon tho Minutes of the
lfiturl.
Col. D. It. Duncan. C. C. Gulp and J. C.
Wallace, Esq's., responded to tho resolutions
in very appropriate and eloquent remarks.
Judge Fiascr also paid a he&rtful
tubule to the illustrious dead, and erdored
the preumble and resolutions to bo spread
upon tho minuds, and that the court stand
adjourned in ro*pect for the lamented Judge
Robert Muoro until Friday morning at 9 1
o'clock.
Death has again entered our community
and summoned hence an esteemed and
honored -member.
On the 6th day of May, 1889, at his
residence in the town of Uuion, the lion.
ROBERT MU.NRO departed this life, in the
98d year of his age.
Judge Muoro was horu ia Charleston,
8. C., August 19th, 1796. He received his
eduoation inSootlaud, the former home of
his parents. Ho scrvod in the Merchant '
Marino service during hi* youth. His vessel
was so near that ho heard distinctly
the battlo of Waterloo. During his said
sorvico he visited nearly all the ports of
the world.
He was admitted to the Bar in 1823, and
almost immediately acquired and preserved
for 80 years a largo and luorativo practice.
He represented his Distriot in the Stato
Senato for some years.
In 1863 he was oleoted one of tho CirIouit
Judges of the State of South Carolina,
and continued to hold that honorable posiI
tion until the days of reconstruction, whan
1 all the old Jlldcrfta w?r? dnnnanil r? r?
that lime until his death lie practiced law i
at Union C. II. in copartnership with his
son, tho lion. William Munre.
Suoh is a brief outline of the history of
the deoeased. It is diffiouit to do full jus- I
tice in a brief spaoe to the many noble qualities
which adorned his character and illustrated
his life. As a citizon ho was exemplary,
and as a Judgo he was upright, conscientious
and impartial. In all tho relations
of life ho strove to do h:s duty. His
mind was naturally clear and strong, and
hod been improved by study and oultivalion.
These advantages of themselves are
sufficient to m&ko a successful lawyer, but
in other respeols, too, his mind was eminently
fitted for the profession of his ehoioe
and gave him deservedly a high reputation
all over our State.
In oommemorating tho virtues of our departed
friend there is another quality
which marked his character, and which in
its highest manifestations is as rare as it is
honorable ; that is, an honest independence
of mind in forming and maintaining his
opinions, and in expressing them on all
proper occasions. This grand prinoiple of
his character was well tested and oxoinplified
in the days of reconstruction, when he
was deposed from the office of Judge ; for

the same position by the party in power he
gpurncd tho offer and rejected the office,
declining e?eu the appearance of affiliating
'with wH "party.
1a paying our la?t tribute to our doparted
friend we may truly say that lie li?od the
life of a noble gentleman and died-the
death of an huinblo christian.
As a mark of our respect for the character
nod memory of the deceased,
Be it Rttolved, 1. That in tho doathof
Judge Hubert Munro, our community hat
sustained a loss that oannot be filled, and
tho Bar has lost one of its most honest and
upright members, and tho State of South
Carolina one of its brightost oraamorts.
2d. That we respectfully tender our sincore
aondolence to the bercared members
of his family, and.as?uro them of our sympathy.
3d. That these proceedings bo presented
to tbe presiding Judgo at the next term of
the Circuit Court with the request that the
same be entered upou the Minutes of the
Court, and a blank page be insoribed to his
memory.
4th. That a copy of this preamble and
resolutions be transmitted to the family of
ine accessed.
6th. That these proceedings be published
in the Union Timki. *
