r" Th? storm occurred on March 10. It was
also reported that sixteen merchantmen ware
lost.
The American war ships wrecked were all
attached to the Pacific station under command
of Rear Admiral Lowls A. KImberly,
whose staff Is as follows: Captain Norman
H. Farqubar, chief of staff; Lieutenant Henry
O. Rittenhouse, flag lieutenant; Lieutenant
Green leaf A. Merriam, secretary.
tm irenton was a snip rig^ou wooden
cruiser, and was built in 1876. Her displacement
was 8900tons. In 1881 elie was made
the flagstaff of the European squadron, and
oontinued in that capacity up to tbe time of
;.?* .. \ this disaster.
Tbe Trenton was considered the beet
i wooden vessel in the navy. 6ho was built at
1 tbe Brooklyn Navy Yard.
The Nlpeic was the best known of the
United States war vessels at Samoa. She
was pat In commission a year and a half ago,
arriving at Apia last November.
She had long been rated in naval circles as
a second-rate cruiser, having a wooden hull
bark rigged. She carried six guns, mostly
smooth bore, in hvnfaln battery. She had
a displacement'of 1375 tons.
The/sc>fuplement of the Nipsic. was 174 ma
^0+- ? . tlffits and blue jackets, although some of her
short time men wore sent home from Samoa
when the Adams left for San Francisco in
January last.
The Vandalta was a bark-rlggod wooden
cruiser (second rate), with a displacement of
3100 tons. She was rebuilt in 1874, and in
1881 belonged to the North American squadron.
Sho carried a battery of eight guns, mostly
smooth boro 0-lncn Dahlgrcu's for her
brondsido battery and two Parrot riflo3 for
pivots.
ThsOlgahad been tbe most formidable of
tbo German vessels at Apia. Sho Is unarmored
and unprotected, a single deck cruiser,
built in 1980. and equipped with a battery of
eight six-inch Krupp rides and a number of
Hotchkiss revolving cannon. Sho hod a speed
of fourteen knots and a crow of 307 men.
Her displacement was 2200 tons.
The German war vessels Ad lor and liber
wero inferior to the Qlira both in sire and
strength. The Adler carried four lvrupp
guns and tho Eber carried three.
The Eber was eqnlppo.l for torpedo serv ice.
Captain Fritz, who commanded the Adler,
was one of the seamen and fighters of whom
Germany was proudest

The German man-of-war Ehor was the first
vessel to drag her anchor. She liccame unmanageable
oml was driven helplessly 011 the
reef which mns around the liurbo'r. Sho
struck broadside on, at 0 o'clock in the morning.
The shock caused hor to lurch and to
stagger back, and she sank In a moment In
doep wator. Most of hor men were under
hatchos, and scarcely a soul of them
escaped.
The German war ship Adler was the next
to succumb. She was lifted bodily by a
gigantic wavo and cast on her beam ends on
the roof.
A terriblo struggle for lifo ensued among
the ofilcers and sailors aboard. Many
plungod into the raging surf and struck out,
some reaching the shore in safety. Others
clung to the rigging until tho masts foil. Of
those two gained the shore safely. The Captain
of tho Adler and several other officers
woro saved.
In tho meantime the United States warshin
Nipslc had been dragging hor anchors
. and drifting toward thy shore. Tho Captain,
T" however, managed to koep control and ran
her on a sandbank.
Boats were immediately lowered, and tho
wliolo company wore savod, with tho oxenntion
of six men, who were drownod by tin)

Tho United Slates vessel Vaudalfa was
carried before tho galo right upon the roof.
She struck with n terrible shock, and tho
viinuin was iiunou against a uatnug gun
and stunned.
Ucfore he could recover a groat sea swept
the deck and washed him away. Tlio vessel
sank lifty yards from the JJipslc. Sevoral of
the oflicers and men were washftl overboard
nnd drowned. Others |>erUiiod while making

Some remained for hours clinging to tho
rigging, buthonvy waves dashod unceasingly
over tueni, nnd one by one they were swept
away.
Dy this time night had set in. Many natives
and Europeans lia l gathered on the
shore, and all wore anxious to render assistance
to tho wreckod vessels and their unfortunate
crows, but, darkness having fallen on
the scene, they were wholly una'do to bo of
? borvico.
Soon after tho Vandulia ha?l sunk, tho
American warship Trenton broke from her
uncborago and was driven upo.t the wreck
of tho Vandulia, whence slio drifted to tho
shoro. Tho bottom of the Trenton was completely
stove and her hold was half full of
water.
As morning broke the German man-of-war
Olga, which had hitherto bravely withstoo 1
the gale, although much battered by the
hoavy seas thut constantly broko upon her,
l>ecuino unmanageable and was driven ii|>ou
tho beach, where sho lay in a tolerably
favorable position.

A band of masked men took throoof tho
