"A hundred years have passed since the Government which our forefathers founded was formally organised. At noon ou the 80th day of April, 1789, in the oily of New York and in tho presence of an assemblage of heroio men whoso patriotic devotion had led Pie colonies to victory and independence George Washington took the oath of office as chief magistrate of the now bom Republic. This impressive act was preceded, at nine o'clock in the morning in all the churches ef the city, by prayer for God's blessing on the government and its first President. The centennial of this illustri\ ous event in our history has been declared a <1 enbral holiday < by act of Congress, to the end that the peo- < pie of the whele country may join in com- i uiemorative exercises appropriate to the < aay. in order the joy of the oocaaiou may be associated with the deep thaukfulness io I the minds of the people for all our blessings 1 in the past and in devout supplication to 1 God for their gracious continuance in the future, the representatives of religious creeds, both Chiistian and Hebrew, have memoralited the goveanment to designate * an hour for prayer and thanksgiving on 1 that day. The people, whose houses 0 were in imminent danger and some of these A who had been burned otit, had removed their household goods and stock to the t plowed fields around to escape the destructive flames. Tho town of Inmaa was A thought to have been burned and tho wind was blowing a terithc gale oarrying the J flames with it. Fires in tub County.?It was reported in the city yesterday that largo forest fires were raging in the vicinity of Traveller's F Rest, on tho line of the C. K. & W. rond. The fires had already covered considerable ground and one house was reported burned. Another fire was also reported near the J ltoedy River Church, on the White Horse road. With such winds as prevailed yesterday it is very probablo that much damage was done.?Orttnville New a 1? ? - - Norfolk. Swkit by Fire and Cyclone.? Norfolk, Vn., April 7.?A storm of thunder, lightning and bail, which broke over the city yesterday morning, changed at 10 s o'clock lost night into a cyolone, the wind blowing fifty-four miles an hour until f> o'clock this morning. The wind came from the northeast ami blew inte the harbor and its tributaries. The tide, which was at high water this morning at 1.3G o'clock, was eighteen inches higher than ever recorded before. The lower part of the city was flooded, and fire broke outoa lVat?r Street, caused from slacking lime on the wharf of John O. Carnage & Son. The old Cotton Exchauge building, containing about BOO bnlei p of cotton, and tho warehouse of J. W. Perry & Co., containing about GOO bales of cotton, were totally deslroycJ. fe The loss on buildings and stock destroyed oa in this block is estimated at $150,000, partly pi insured. It is probable that the losses sustained by wholesale grocery merchants from water forced iuto their warehouses by the unprecedented tide will nearly equal this amount. Fatal Railroad Wreck.?Baltimore, April 2.?A st .vial from West Point, Va., says a fatal wreck occurred on the York ._ River branch of the Richmond and Danville I Railroad, about 2 miles above, about 9 o'clock Saturday night. The heavy rains of n. Saturday washed out a culvert and a part of the darn between the tank pond and the river, and an engine and seven freight cars U( ? plunged into the washout. Two men?a ? colored hrakctnan aud the fireman, a young n man named Darwin ? were buried under ,s tho cars and killed. The body of the firsman has been gotten out, but the colored j. man has not been found. Engineer Lynch was terribly scalded, but managed to crawl j. out. ^ g.
