Mb. Editor.?I saw an arjiole in (be
Charleston World of Jan. 18th,'
Hjfe# ? Joueerille correspondent of (bat paper,
i signed "8. L.," (bat somewhat surprised
| me, and I think it would surprise alt of the
Mfe Alliances, as it disclosed something (bat
K$ none of as was aware of, and I thought 1
great many. who take
thoTiMBH but do not read the yitrld. He
H| aald that the marehsnts have giren the Alllanoe
in ibis county the ''black aye," and
that tb* Allienco wanted the marohanta to
^0 sell to alt in the Order, taking only tlieir
IB honor as security, jind to lei the Allianee
0 select three men to examioo thtlr books
and ron thdr.basitlsas in general. Now,
the mercliaotz have not given us the "blaokeyo,"
but they may be trying te do eo. II#
intimates tboy aro against us ; but wo are
not against them, for we vtiih to "do unto
> others as wo would bo dqne by."
l . As for too Alliance tryiog to run their
t - business, it is fklse, absolutely false. I
would like to knew whore he got hie information,
as the Order is a secret orgahiza/
tion. And I dare efty he oould not battc
\ been induced te have written that for the
Timis, where so many Union County Alii*

| V display his knowledge (which is just about
i as extensile, as his range of fcVestglit,) of
f the workings of the Allihpoe ; therefore,
^ould diffuse intelligence through a widoly
circulated daily papor. The Jonesville
p merohants may hate given -the Joneevlllo
,t Alliance the blaok eye, but he said the
A County, without making any ezoeption.
oonsequeatly, the Alliance can roadily see
^^^that he is the possessor of a vast amount of
MJ^Hgnorance ami indosoribable "litter," concorning
their movotnenls. 1 am of the
opinion that he himself is a merchant, or
a rejected Alliance applicant, and ha weuld
I do well to keep his mouth abut, and his
I ears and eves onen until ha innm ??? ?
I of what the Alliance ia doing throughout
the county, before ho tries to put it in print.
I am in a position to knew what they are
doing. 1 Ihiok the Alliance is painted a
s. great doal redder than it really is. I hope
he will see this, and the next time he writes
about the Alllanoe he will put it in the
Tines, so we all, at home, cau see what we
are doing. Faumer.

^ Thi Man and thb Doo.?Atlanta, Ga.,
I January 26-?The State of Georgia has just
pt concluded negotiations with the State of
Ljj South Carolina in wliioh the possession of
a dog was the point at issue. Judge HopB
kins, who is the present mayor of Thomas9
ville, in this Stale is a great lover of live
stock. Bosidas horses and fino cattle he
I owns a pack of dogs in which the finost
breeds are represented. G. II. Coxwell, of
Hardeeville, S. C., who had been on a
visit to Thomasville, admired Judgo Hopkins'
dogs, lie went to boo thorn several
times, and finally, when ha returned home,
one of the dogs disappeared.
It was some weeks before Judge Hopkins
had occasion to couple the disappearance
of the dog with that of Mr. Coxwell.
Conductor Barnard one day saw Mr. Coxwell
and tho dog together. Returning to
Thoroasvitto he laid the foot before the
Judge." There was a stormy scene, Judge
Hopkins declaring that he would have the
uug if he had to follow it io Mexico. A
warrant for laroeny was sworn out against
Mr. Coxwell, and an officer was soot with it
to Governor Gordon, Is Atlanta, to procure
a requisition on Governor RinharHnon nf
South Carolina.
Armed wiib the mandate of the Stale of
Georgia, Sheriff Hurst prooeeded to Columbia,
where he made demand upon the Governor
of South Carolina for the bod/ of Mr.
Coxwell, as well as that of the dog. The*
requisition was honored, and the sheriff,
thus warranted, prooeeded to Hardoeville
and bore both Mr. Coxwell and the dog off
to Tnomasville, wnere the/ repose, one in
jail and the other in Judge Hopkins's ken-'
nel.?N. Y. Times.
Sbxatoii Hbarst's Jockit.?Anthony
Hamilton, the celebrate^ young colored
jockey who has risen from comparative
poverty to fimc and fortune, and wht.se return
to Carolina was exclusively mentioned
in the World about two weeks ago, is on
his.native hoatb, having come te Columbia
on a visit to his mother. From a weekly
Stipend of $1 60 to a bank, aooount of $16000
in five years is a miraculous achievement,
and no wonder that this yeung African
Croesus is the subject of many congratulations
from his old companions, and many
JL>. admiring glances from the belles of his
race. Hamilton has certainly "struck it
rioh" this time. In conversation to-day he
