of them?one at least?and of the
enjoymeut that arose therefrom, if other
? thoughts do not so successively ruu through
my mind as to incapacitate mo fob either
thinking or writing.
Concerrptfg the treo at Qilliam's Chapel,
on Cbrt&mas eve, I am sorry to say that I
tYrtlld not attend, owing to my having busiat
tho country's metropolis; but I
learn .from tboee who were there that it
iras a decided success. Tho tree was a
beautiful holly, filled with red berries,
themselves adding beauty to the tree, and
combined with the artistic flower decorations,
gave it a brilliant appearance. The
doors and windows were closed, and the
lamp8 lighted, which gave tho interior of

of the occasion, which made it pass off
Smoothly and without grating.
I hope, by being preseut, I may be enabled
to give a better sketch of the Christmas
tree on Tuesday night, the 2oth, at
Salem Church. Just as the hours of tho
"blessed natal morning" began to mellow
into warmth, from the glowing sunshine,
the oommittce appointed by tho school to
prepare the tteo, was at their place with a
pretty codar, which was selected by the
ladies, U9 it did not have the slicking leaves
peculiar to tbo holly. After the tree wag
firmly planted tho committee retired, to
'-^2. giro place to the committeo for docoraling
the tree and putting on the presents ; the
lady members of which were Mrs. J. 11.
Randolph, Mrs 11. U. liobson, Mrs. L. C.
Crooker, pisses llessio Jeter, Ida Jones,
Ida Johns, aad Eliza Johns, assisted by
Miss Vicky l'cake, of Glenn Springs, who
took a very activo part in tho tree, and the
welfaro of the littlo Sunday School scholars.
This committee wilh their half dozen male
assistants, worked assiduously from 12 M.
until dark in trying to put ou tho trco the
numerous presents beforo the beginning of
the exercises of the occasion, ut 7 P. M.
" The tree was loaded with rich, beautiful
and useful presents that made it fairly
glitter. Everything was unwrapped before
being put on, to give the treo more brilliancy,
and so it could bo seen by the audience.
except nn occasional package sout
there for a young- lady by some adoring
juvenile, who earnestly requested that they
would not be unwrapped.
As the sun begau rapidly to approach
the Western horizon, almost every ono Logan
hurrying hither and thither, lookiug
bright and ploosaut, smiling as they thought
of the pleasant surprises they were preparing
for their friends, parcols, brothers,
istcrs, sous, daughters, cousins, sweethearts,
and enfatili terrible.
At 7 P. M. the audience, which uiieu ihu
ohurcb, was addressed by Dr. John P.
Thomas, followed by Rev. J. M. Friday.
Then began the distribution of/proscuts,
and the little ones Becmed to m into uuuttprable
ecetacies. Not alto^ther was

Tathsrs, not members, nlnoed gifts upon
it, for their friends and relatives, which
helped considerably. Alt of the real presents
were appreciated, but thero were aouio
' that I suppose might have been celled comi
oal ones, which caused a great d??l of
hearty laughter, that could not bo suppressed,
but at which one could not become
offended, but bad to laugh at their own
"selling," with the expectation ot getting
a chance to laugh in return at tlieir elbow
neighbor.
Tdie foregoing are tho pleasant social
features of suoh an occasiou, but tboro are
"r" ' always some drawbacks when anything like
that is held during Christmas week, where
whiskey is so frco and plentiful, and those
who have lost control of themselves, or
wLo utterly ignore self-control, and liavo
no gauge to their tanks, can (ill themselves
' with it, making of their hearts the "devil's
workshops" by converting themselves iutp
fhll grown idiots, and go into a church
^
making all sorts of uncalled for and disturbing
noises.
Nevertheless, this was a delightful occasion,
and enjoyment ran high; kindly

Little A Hie, daughter of M. L. and Kiln
Howell, was two years and three months old
and was a bright lovely child, tbo joy and
oouifort of her parents and loved by all who
knew her; but that dreadful disenseso fatal
to the lit tie ones, membranous croup, fastened
its deadly fungs upon her tender
little form and in a few hours it had done
its fatal work. Her parents cherished the
fond hope that in a few short years ul
their dear little /.llic would develop into a
ucautiful blushing maiden, but these fond
hopes are forever blighted,, for that little at
form lits to-day mouldering to dust in the
lonely cemetery at Gilead church. While o-,
their fond hopes are blasted they have (ho
consolation of knowing that tho spirit of
their sweet child is w ith its Karinnr in
