Saluda, N. C. is one of the pleasantest places
lo visit in tl*c mountains. Situated as it is,
in one of the best climates in the South, and
inhabited by a people who are generous and
progressive, it is fast evolving into a nice,
buiet little town. It was founded by Col.
A. Tanner, who is now the biggest man
in every way, in Polk County. Col. Tanner is
still keeping the Mountain House, where the
best people go, where the best table is kept and
where the best views can be bad. Among the
hnndsome new residences recently erected we
noticed that of Dr. Weddings, of Augusta, and
Mr. A. K. Carson, of Tlorida.
Among the large enterprises that have recently
been orgnuized in the State is tlio
Berkeley County Land and Stock Company,
of Charleston, of which the Manufacturer's
Jtccortl says :
The company has just purchnscd V?.5,000
acres of laud in Berkeley County of a varied
character. Some of it is suitable for agricultural
purposes; a large tract is heavily timbered
with virgin pine, and it also contains im
mouse swamps nnd postures. The swamps are
full of cypress aud other vnluahlo timbers.
The company intend at once to raise cattle and
other stock for the Charleston Market. They
will also set to work us soon as possible to improve
their lands and develop their timber.
The capital stock is v>ltK>,(HK), nnd is entirely
held in Charleston. Many of the best business
men arc stockholders, aud it is controlled bj' a
set of young and active men, who are sure to
push it to success.'

OBITUARY.
C1ALLMAN.?Airs. Lizzie F. Gallman, tio
Harnett, was born at Cedar Springs, Spartanburg
County, S. C., Feb. 21, 1811, an J entered
into rest July 17, 1887, in Charlotte, N. C.
She was converted to Cod at the age of fourteen
and gave her young life without reserve
to llis service with a consecration that ceased

touch of (lentil and the Muster said 'come up
higher.'
On the 2d of Oct., I HOC, she was happily
married to Mr. .I.J. Unllmau, with whom slio
lived in affectionate, trusting companionship
until Ood severed the earthly ties which lie
himself had formed.
As a fruit of their union there was given to
them a son, who proceeded the mother to the
spirit world, and a daughter, who now, bereft
of both a companion and a mother, mourns
with tlie father in submissive grief, for they
sorrow not as those without hope.
As a Christian Mrs. Galluiaii was not demonstrative
but devout ami exemplary, loving
Christ and His church, and adorning her life
by an upright walk and a (iodly conversation.
Sslie was a member of the Hapiist Church and
loved hcr church and its members and was
interested in its welfare and progress.
On a quiet Sabbath morning when the rising
sun was gilding the Kastcru sky with glory
and Hooding the earth with splendor, llio redeemed
spirit left its earthly tenement to mingle
with glorified hosts of God in the city that
hath no end of the son or the moon to shine in
it, for the glory of God did lighten it and the
lamb is the light thereof. ! '. D. S.
