A l'luiinuiTiox E?itor Siiot.?Jackson,
Mis;1?., May A desperate pistol fight to?k pi ico
last evening hot ween Col. Jones llnmUton, State
Senator from tIlls county for the past four years,
ami one of the lessees of the penitentiary,
niiil 1! 1' thmibrell, editor of the Sword and
Shield, the State Prohibition organ. About a
year ago young (Jumbrell, who is the son of
a prominent JSaptist minister residing hare
mid the editor of the State l'uptist organ, began
the i iihlication of the Sword and Shield
and has ever since, in very strong language,
nini'c war on Governor J.owery mid the State
Administration, and Congressman (ntchinga
for Ids mi it n in penitentiary matters when he
was allot t;ey general of tlie State, and has
been esj ecinlly hitter en Col. Hamilton, criticising
in uiiii ensured terms his action iti the
State Siiinte mid as lessee of the penitentiary.
On April t-'l there appeared in the Clarion a
call signed over a notn i/e jdunw urging that Coi.
Hamilton stand lor re-election. Two days
later Oatnhvell's paper came out with an article
raying, in sul stance, that the people did not
want a mail to represent them in the Senate
who ilisrrgntded the interests of the peop'c,
ami whose sole purpose ill the Senate was to
look after his own corrupt jobs. It charged
that, as lessee of the penitentiary, he was seeking
to defraud the State out of SSt 1,1 MX)
through a loophole in his honl, and wound up
l?^v saying llint the tunn elected must also have
a high personal cliarncter.
Since ihc publiciition of this article trouble
hns been anticipated, and it came last night,
(inrobrell wstt walking up the street, and just
p.s he was crossing the iron bridgo spanuing
Capital street Col llumiltou's carriage overtook
liim and shooting begun. It is claimed
by Hamilton's friends that Uuiubrell tired the
first shot, and that Col. Hamilton then jumped
out of the carriage ntid the duel with pistols
began on the bridge. This theory is denied by
( ftiiibrell s friends, who claim that (ianibrcil
wasovcr'akcu and the assault inade on him,
and that more persons than Hnm ltonsliol.
Cauda ell was found in a pool ofblaod, gasping.
and soon expired, lie was shot through
the knee and through the body, the lattcrMiali
entering just below the navel and going clear
through him, fracturing Ihc backbone and
lodging just under the skin of his hack. The
third slitd went in nn inch below the left car,
and ranged upward, but did not reach the
brain. His face was a'so frightfully disfigured
having been beaten and gashed by being
struck with a heavy pistol.
Col. Hamilton was the only person found
on the bridge when tho ofliecra arrived. He
wns &I80 jriguuuiiT "uuiiui'u. his i?m ivrin
was shattered at the elbow. He was also shut
in tlio stomach. This ball lias not been probed
for, and th? doctors nro in doubt as to us
course. He is resting casj, but has a lirtlo
fevor this evening, nud the result with him
cannot be foretold.
