Inbcrasce That Dobs Not Inscrb.?The Spartanburg correspondent of tho A'sict and Courier gives what may may be called 'sharp practice' ou the part of Insurance Companies in adjusting heavy losses by fire, and should be remembered as a warning to others who may be as unfortunate as our friend Col. Thomson : \\ lien Col. Thompson's house was burned it was insured in the Oermania Fire Insurance Company for ?4,OC0. and his lurniture for $1,600. When the house was burned there was no doubt in the minds of citixens here that he would receive the full amount on the house, as it would be impossible to build one of similar size and durability far that amount, cheap as labor and building material are at this season of the year. When the agent came he brought an adjuster from Atlanta, who sug. gested to Col. Thompson that, inasmuch as the policy required the appointment of two persona to say what the loss was, providol there was a disagreement on the part of the company and the insured, that they should select their men. Col. Thompson, thinking this a mere form and that the real loss would be plsced even above the insurance, signed the agreement. If a company goes on, year after year, insuring a house for a certain price, when they have every facility for ascertaining its real value, they ought to be made to rebuild or pay the full insurance. There is not a carpenter here that would touch Thompson's house for the amount oi'jred. Our losses have been very small by fire, not equal to one-fourth the amount paid for policies, and it seems uqjust that a company should kick against paying an actual loss where there is no suspicion of fraud or foul play. -w FanxiNu U.ndkr Difficci.ties? A gentlemac from the Liberty Ilall section witnessed a novel sight while on his way to town on Monday. In a field by the roadside were two negro men drawing n plow and a negro woman was holding it. The ground was hard, but they managed to make a pretty good furrow. When asked what that sort of proceeding meant, they cxplaiued that they could not get a mule. They had rented the land, and were trying to cultivate it. The incident illustrates forcibly the desire of the negro to fartn on his own hook rather than for wages. No doubt the three oould . hire at good wnges and make something, but they prefer to rent and make nothing.?New. berry Obicrver. < A Bic. 8alk of Cottox.?Galveston, March 1*3.?The largest single transaction in spot cotton in the history of the trade of Texas, if not of the entire South, occurred here this afternoon after business hours. The sale was for 0,500 bales by Willis & Bro. to Kaufmann & llunge for export. The total spot sales in this market to-day aggregate 8,118 representing over 8100,000. The total stock of Galveston to-day is 1S1.55C, but the above heavy purchase has reduced the atneunt of cotton remaining for sale in first hands to about r?,C00 bales, which is less than the stock in any previous year at this season. Mehcastilk Dishonesty?Oa the trial of a care growing out of a fraudulent assignment, Lawyer Charlton declared laat week that his purpose and that of his associates in the suit wns to check, if possible, the nefarious practice which is blighting the commercial honor of Savannah. There may not he any more fraudulent assignments here than in other cities, in proportion to thtir respective populations, bat suspicious failures occur with alarming frequency.?Cor. II., April 7.?James Gibson, his daughter, Mollie Gibson, and Banks Woodward, all colored, were recently lodged in jail at this place, charged with arson. Thoy are accused of burning, on March SO, the dwelling-house of Mrs. Murray, of this county, and the finger of suspicion points against them in consequence of aonte trouble that hid arisen between them and Mrs- Murray. On the 30th of last month she went to Kichburg to bring an action before the trial justice against James Gibson for allowing his stock to daniAgc her grain, and daring her absence her home, with all her furniture, was destroyed by fire. We feel almost heart-broken to give up our dear little babe, bat that monster, 'death' has snatched her from us. She was the first out of twelve children to be taken away from us. Sleep on, little babe, we would not call von back. Just a little while and we will facet again in that bright land, not made with hands but in life eternal, were there is no more sorrow, no more pain.
