Thb Cottoh Facto by at Laubbkb.?The
large attendance present at Ibe meeting last
Tuesday night was at once gratifying and assoring,
manifesting, as it did, the deep interest
felt by our people in the proposed Cotton
Fectory. If there had been any doubt as to
their earnestness and unanimity it was entirely
dispelled. The discussion was of a calm,
practical, earnest character. The action ef
Ibe meeting was of like character, as will be
seen by reference to the proceedings elsewhere
in this issue.
It is proposed to raise, by private subscription,
one hundred thousand dollars for the
purpose indicated above, by the people of
Laurens, Town and County. This amount is
to be supplemented by a similar amounnt, to
be raised, and which has been promised, outside
the County, making the capital stock $200,000.
The shares, very properly, we think,
have been placed at the low figure of twentyfive
dollars. Ibis will enable people of small
neans to subscribe. No money is to be called
for before October nest, when one-fourth will
be required. After that time the money will
be oalled for at stated times, to be fixed
by the the Directors.
une hundred thousand dollars is a large sum
of money, but it should be remembered that
the objeot in view is a large one, and the benefits
to bo derived from it will be large. And
then again, the amount proposed Is to be
raised by general subscription. As all will be
benefitted all can afford to subscribe
according to their means, mueh or little.
Thus, what at first glances may appear an almost
impossible amount, can, by united effort,
be promptly obtained.
Of course it will require active, persistent
work to aooomplish the desired end. It requires
work, hard work, to secure anything
worth having. But a Cotton Factory here is a
necessity, unless we are willing to sit down
contentedly, and seo our neighbors on every
side of us outstripping and leaving ns far behind
in the march of improvement and progress.
We are not willing to believe our people
will allow this. A little over one year ago a
Building and Loan Association was organised
here, which baa made almost unprecedented
progress, ana is still in rapid progress. Next,
only a few months since, a National Bank was
establishsd, This, too, has progressed most
satisfactorily, and it is now contemplated to
increase its capital to $100,000. Another
National Bank, we are informed, will be start*
ed here early next Fall, nearly all the stoek
having been subscribed. This is the strongest
evidence that our people are neither dead nor
sleeping, but wide awake and full of business
life and vigor. We might enumerate other
proofs of this, but these are sufficient for the
present.
With a proper effort, which we feel confident
Is going to be made, the proposed Cotton Factory
is an assured success.?Herald, lit tail.
