Land As a IUsia or CnantT.?Many favorable comments have been made upon the plan for a 'Land and improvement compauy,' recently outlined in this correspondence, and a number of encouraging mcssigcs have been sent to the gentlemen who conceived the project. It is not improbable that the idea will soon materialise into some substantial action. There is no 'syndicate' behind the project and mighty little capital as yet, but that is no reason why it should fail, lly a wise combination of their surplus lands in the hands of capable managers a number of poor planters can wield as much influence and command as many resources as a group of moneyed meo. If anything is to be done to revive South Carolina the ordinary tun of citizens will have to take the initiative in it. Our rich men have too sure an income from investments in bonds and mortgages to induce their entry into new fields. The greater the necessities of the landowner and the ordinarv inHii?i?-i?J - * ? ?-H"?| the greater the power of those who hold I he purse-strings, aud South Carolina may hare to wait long before wide-visioned and patriotic capitalists employ their energies and resources upon her soil. There are some Stales where rich men build memorials of their wea'lh in farms that do them honor and their communities good, but no doubt our South Carolina syndics hare not reached that height of riches which develops the philanthropist These are not communistie words, uor aro they prejudiced. They merely outline facts which every citizen of South Carolina realizes. Here in Columbia we have very few wealthy people, but it is among the ranks of those wo have that there Is the greatest apathy as to progress and opposition to wholesome innovation. Our projected railroad to Spartanburg and the West lags uncertain for lack of that hearty support among the wealthier people which would secure a prompt and adequate subscription by this township. Columbia is not the only community in the State where this apalliy of wealth stagnates the public spirit. It is unfortunately but an example of other communities. Let anyone think for a uiinnte what a vast deal o( good one public-spirited, progressive capitalist could do in South Carolina, what industries he could inaugurate by the force of his example, what resources he could develop, what con6dence he could instil, how infectious would be his example 1 Yet what he could do some scores of poor people can do equally well by concentrating their resources and their means. C., March 26?When the Keeves-Corwin case was called in Trial Justice Blease'a office this morning it was expected that there would be trouble before the cose would end, because of the nersonal fcelintr exhibited hei?re?n rvo George Johnstone and Colonel John 1). Jones, While Colonel Jones wos addressing the Justioo on somb point in the onae, the Counsel became engaged in a passage of words, during which Johnstone denounced Jones as an 'infamous puppy,' whereupon firing began, which continued till the contents of each pistol was discharged. Johnstone and Jones were within a few ffeet of eaoh other daring the firing, and it is somewhat remarkable that bolh were not killed. Col. Jones received a wound between the eighth and ninth ribs, the bullet passing directly downward and onward through the stomach and diaphragm and lodging beneath the floating ribs on the right side. At the present writing the wound is considered mortal, it being the opinion of the physicians that he will not live longer than twenty-four hours. Col. Johnstone received one shot through the lobe of his ear, a glancing shot in his right groin, a bullet passing through tho coat sleeve of his left arm. Neither of his wounds are considered serious. George B. Cromer, Johnston's partner, and the Mayor of the city, in attempting to preserve the peace narrowly escaped with bis life, two bullets passing through his clothes.? Special to Col.
