ASH1NU1 ON LETTER
(Fiomuur Ucjnhir Corrrn/tomh ill.)
Washington, Aug., I, 18S-K
The President will leave for New York on
Friday, and unless something unexpected transpires
'ie will li.irdly he seen in Washington
again before the middle of September. 1
should not expect hitu to slay away much lattr
than that date, lie evidently intends to come
(rack fresh in the Autumn for the hard work
that must precede the session of Congress, and,
indeed, must continue while ^Congress is here, j
Hut it should not be thought that the President
is simply going to he idle during li s aV-eucc.
For live months lie has been constantly denied
the opportunity he seeks to pott let- carefully
iiiiiny important topics and to stilly llic tiaiioual
questions which :ire somewh ?t new lo iiim.
This opportunity lie will have while absent
from Washington, and it will be ot' great advantage
to him.
l)r. Newman is reported to have said that the
memorial to be erected over General Grant's
body should not be convent ion il an I meaning,
less, like the granite sanlt erected to honor
Washington at the ('apital '. l)r. Nevvmia's
opinion upon such a matter is not of much importance,
but there tire others who ought to
know better about the Washington Monument.
Those, however, who live within sight of the
great shall know that the design justifies
itself. In the hotuely praise of the household,
"the Monument grows on you." It has grown
to be a part ofllie daily life of thousands who
have uevfer analyzed their feelings in regard to
it. I'iiclusciously the eye seeks it, ati 1 dwells
upon it. Its v. slue.ss an 1 simplicity allies it
wit It nature, and it allccts the mini after :t
time, as do the sea, the lake, the cataract and
the mountain. As all great natural objects
have, it has its moods. It It is in ttty tspoots.
lit the grey of c trly morning, in the bright

starlight, in the deeper darkness, the Monument
gives distinct an I separate impressions to
the beholder. The gathering mists, the driv
