to a refined and appreciative audience at li

The subject was treated with a masterly x
hand, and the lecture was illuminated 1
throughout by refiucd scholarship and true
cloqueucc. It was instructive a-id jutertaining,
humorous and pathetic, pluiu, j
and yet bristling with strong logic, and
tiuished with the adornments of classical 1
rhetoric
The lecturer replied to the reccut sneers j
at oratory, and showed, by the examples of 1
such men as Dcuioethcucs, Chatham, Mirabeau,
llcnry and others what eloqncnco has
done in shaping the destinies of uieu and
nation?, lie gave the uimcs of Chrysostoui,
Spurgeon, Richard Fuller and other
eminent divines as examples of the power
of pulpit oratory to sway the passions and
affect the hearts of men. lie claimed that }
no age of the world was so favorable to oratory
as the present, with the momcntnus (
questions now pressing themselves upon the
public attcntiou. He maintained that Ilea- <
son, Imagination, Conviction aud Action are '
the four great elements of eloquent oratory.
Calhoun, Kvcrctt, Webster, Prentiss and
Clay possessed some of these elements in a
high dcgioj, but were deficient in others.?
Calhoun possessed the eloquence of reason
and logic?"he was a granite column without
a wreath around it." Everett had the
eloquence of beauty and taste ; Daniel Webster
the eloquence of reason and imagination--"lie
possessed the magnificence of a
winter's night when all the stars are out."
Henry Clay hod iho eloquence of passiou?
'his very look was majesty," and W. L.
Yancey possessed the (ire and graudeur of
Dcuiosthcucs?"the liuio to build his nionuuicut
has not couie, but it will couic." The
uieu iu whom the four great elements of
oratorical powers were combined were Domonsthencs,
Cicero, Mirabcau and W. L.
Yoncoy.
The lecturer, while admitting the advantage
of crises and occasion to the orator,
claimed that the genius of real eloquence
could not be held down by such fetters ?
He concluded with the proposition that the
best orator is lie whp to nil other needed
gifts and graces adds the blessed quality of
virtue, lJad men may bo eloquent. "I3oIingbroke
was cloqucr t; Ingcrsoll, the desperado
of modern iufidulity, is cloqucut ;
Becchcr is eloquent ; the devil is eloquent
!" but virtue is tho basis of all true
eloquence.
The gilted speaker illustrated his lecturo
by several telling anecdotes, and carried his
audience completely with him. Dr. Hawthorne
has a commanding prescnco and a
remarkably fiuc physique. His voice is rich
and musical,his euunciation is very clear aud
distinct, his gestures are graceful, aud his
wholo bearing is manly and impressive.?

A Murderer's Mistake.?L?st week

Va., and asked to stay a day or two. She
seemed to have plenty of money. Demp
had only one good chamber in the house,
and told her she could occupy that. He
accordingly put her in thcro, giviug her a
bed by the side of his wife's bed. Demp,
seeing that she had money, determined to
murd -*r her, and that night lie crept into
the room, nruicd with an axe. It seems
that his wife and the other woman had
changed beds during the night. Demp
went to the bed which lie supposed the
guest occupied. lie could only distinguish
the outlines ot the figure, and he dclt it
two murderous blows with tho axe. The
noiso awoke the sleeper in the other bed,
and the man discovered by her screams that
be bud murdered bis own wife, lie fled
from tbc room, and, fortunately for her
safety the woman left the bouse. Dcmp
returned late, carried the body of bis wife
into a clump oi woods near by, and buried
it by tbc light of a torch. He then went
back and was engaged in burning the bed
sheets when arrested.

accosted by his neighbor opposite, who was
also putting on bis shoes, with tbc inquiry,
"My frieud, arc you a rich man ?" The
Vermontcr looked astouished, but answered
the pleasant-faced, tired looking gentleman
with a "Yes, I'm tolerably rich." A pause
oecurred, and then came another question :
"How rich arc you?" He answered,
"About 8700,000 or 8800,000. Why ?"?
"Well," said the old man "if I were as rich
as you say you are, and snored as loud as I
know you do, 1 would hire a whole sleeper
every tunc I traveled."
