A great work, to be sure, as every tejp ^. body will say; but one wrodght out by a ^^^Tife of arduous labor, aided, by a rare combination of talent and opportunity. And this new system has been inaugurated by our chemist, Dr. St. Julien llavena), through the instrumentality of his oornpound, called Ash Element. /ust as the greatest and mast useful inventions in mechanics are always the most simple, so that oven u child can understand and uso them, so it is in every other affair of life ; tho most useful and effective things are always simple and easily understood, so that from their very simplicity, indeed, they often escape our observation. Wo find this tendency in agriculture as well as in other departments of industry. \ We arc digging and delviug to great depths, , often when the object of our search is just , on the surface. Ileuce we havo elaborate treatises on agricultuc, based on fanciful theories and hypotheses, ignoring plain ficts, having seemingly for thoir purpose the aggrandizement of the author rather than the advancement of agriculture. The laws of nature are inflexible, and she will serve us only as we observe her laws. Obviously, then, our study must be to find out her ways. And in the pursuit of this study wo must be governed by observation and experiment. Nature must answer our questions, and act man. For instanco, if we want to grow wheat we must learn by observation what are the wants of wheat, and so with cotton and corn. If we find that wheat wants Nitrogenous, and peas inorganic material we must supply accordingly. If we find that after wheat Nitrogen is diminished in the soil, and that after peas the soil is replenished with Nitrogen, we have gained unportaut information. \ And so we will go on and observe next t the chemical Droccsses which take nlace in the soil, by which the reaction of one ingrc- i dient upon another produces a third diverse { froui cither. Nor will we fail to observe { the vital properties of plants by which they t effect such changes iu the coustituents of t the soil as enables them to appropriate in- [ gredicnts that would be otherwise unavaila- ' bic. ; In this connection Dr. Liebig says "I, , tiave long since given up the prevalent idea | that fertilizers act in the mere capacity of j furnishing plant food, and hold that they do this ouly to a certain extent, but that t their main function cousists in elaborating | and making plant food out of ingredients found in the soil." t Now, although the pursuit of this study , is measurably within the power of every ?nan, yet to attain to a high degree of sue- f cess requires a special talent combined with f opportunity. { The talent comes by tho endowment of ? God and by education, the opportunity is by : the furnishing of man. I Now it happens by fortuitous circuuistan- | ces, that we have the combination of the | two under the most favorable conditions, | and we begiu our observations: wo find that cotton, tho cereals and grasses, will not thrive except in soil whero there is an excess of Nitrogen. At tho sumo time, we find that Lcguminoids, (peas, beans, &e.,) are indifferent to Nitrogen, but that they require minerals ?ashes, say?in other words, an Ash Elornent. Wo find that cotton, the cereals and grasses, leaves the land bereft of Nitrogen; but that tho Jjoguminoids, under this spe- ( c6c treatment, leave the laud replenished j wit Nitrogen. i Now this is a most significant fact, and it is, indeed, the key to the whole problem. By this, it wound seem, that just as in the animal kingdom, one animal is made sub servient to the life of another, so in the vegetable kingdom. As horbivorous animals are food for the Carnivorous, so Leguminous plants are meant by nature to be food for the (iramiuueious. If, then, we want to grow cereals and grasses, it follows, that we must learn how to grow Loguuiiuoids. We again resort to observation : and wo learn that Lcgumiuoids require an Ash Li lumen t, and that of a pirticular quality and composition, and with this applied, they are comparatively indifferent to the other constitutcnts of the soil. Furthermore, that Loguminoids grown without this compound, do not subserve the same good office to subsequent crops. They will improve the laud, but not to the same degreo; and their continuous use as a fertilizer, without the aid of minerals, has not been found satisfactory. Now. because Leguminoids will grow in a soil deficient in Ammonia, we must not, thereforo, suppose that they do not requit it. On the contrary, tbey arc gross feet era of Ammonia, but their nature is sue that they get their supply almost entire! from the atmosphere. In this way, the appropriate a very large amount of Ammc nia, and by a process peculiar to themselvei they (through the sap and roots) deposit i all in the ground, there to enrich the lam f>r other crops. And not only so, they als< effect such changes in the minerals that hao been applied to themselves, as to render then also more available tc subsequent crops. Now, in connection with this fact, that peas, and other Leguminoids, do thus onrict the land, we find other facts apparently con llankt -! . -L " "** v.ug?uv, via. . mai inc lenmstng capacity oft he pens is in proportion to tho luxuriarct of the vines. Also, that tho longer the growth of the peas, tho greator the amount of Nitrogen for ^"imnnii) ?tlm will supply to the soil. If, therefore, the - pern are supplying Nitrogen during a'l the time of their growth, it follows that the longei they remain on the land, the more Nitrogen will they supply; they should, therefore, bt allowed to die on the ground ; and then, if desired, they may bo turned under; or, at least, the turning under should be delayed as long as possible . It seems also evident, that tho peas can perform but one offico at a time. If they aro expected to feed the land, they cannot be expected at the samo time to serve also as food for man and beast; they must, therefore, bo unmolested. And, lastly : we observe that the benefit to tho soil is cumulative?that is, there is, year by year, more Nitrogenous matter supplied by the peas than is consumed by the following crops. So that the lands arc undergoing progressive annual improvement ?quite the contrary of tho results of agriculture as ordinarily practiced. Note the application of all this is very simple: In our experience, wheat and oats aro tlin. mr>8k nrnfifaKlo ? ./????. and Bermuda or joint grass the most profit* able summer crop. We will say, then, that we want to grow these crops. Wc have found out that certain minerals, called by Dr. Ravencl Ash Llcuieut, arc the best food for Leguminoids ind that Leguminous plants prepare food For the graminacious. To grow wheat and oats, then, we must procure the Ash Element and the Lcguuiiaoids, and apply them as directed, and our work is, in the main, accomplished. The Ash Element we have at hand. Of he Leguminoids, there are a great many varieties?some wild and some cultivated, iome growing in the winter and some in the iummcr. Of the winter-growing varieties, lie wild vetch, or rabbit pea, is the most ivttilable ; and of the summer-growing rnricties the common red or cow pea. To plant wheat and oats, select high and horoughly drained land, plow the land in May or Juue, and sow upon it about five :undred pouuds of Ash Element and two lushels peas, per acre, aud harrow both iu ogether. In the fall, when the vines have lied down, or the planting season is at land, turn them under, broadcast the seed >f tho wheat or oats, and harrow iu. Instead of turning in the vines they may >c burned off, and the seed turned in with he Nischwitch Harrow without plowing.; >r, if the vines (through their extreme luxiriance) will not die in time, and cannot ic turned under, then the oats may be sowed iroadeast upon the top of the green vines, fhe seed will in time reach the ground vhero it will find sufficient lodgment and noisture, aud upon tho vines being killed >y frost, a beautiful crop of oats will appear. The chief objection to this last plan is, hat the seed is liable to be molested by jirds and rats. All these plans will do well, hut we woultl lecidcdfi/ prefer the first ; that is tho plow ng and harrowing. To make a meadow of Bermuda Grass, select a field (if practicable) already possessed by the grass; otherwise procure a supply of the grass roots, chop them up, icattcr, them unniformely over the field lfter a rain, and plow under. Iu tho spring plow up the field, and broadcast upon it ive hundred pounds Ash Element, and two bushels peas per acre, and harrow in. Project the peas from depredation, and allow diem to dio on tho ground. Iu the fall, iow tho seed of the nativo or tho imported retch on tho surfuco. It will find sufficient sovcr in the debris of the peas. Tho vetch jrows from October to May, when it seeds abundantly, dies, and, rotting on the grouud, supplies an abundance ot XMilrogenous matter. Tho following springs, the Bermuda [?rass (tho roots of which are in the land) will take possession, and yield in July, one cutting, another in October, lu the tall apply five hundred pouuds Ash Element again to the soil, to supply tho inorganic matter taken from tho land in the crop removed. The chief difficulty in the establishment of this meadow will be the eradication of briars, grasses, weeds, &c. This may give trouble for two or throe years, but onco accomplished, your work is done, and there it remains a permanent source of income, requiring no plowing, no cultivation, only to be harvested, nnd five hundred to one thousand pounds Ash Element to bo applied annually. Can any one imagine a more delightful system of Agriculture ! The whole wearisome, vexntious, expensive, and profitless work of the yoar, as agriculture is now practiced, resolving itself into the one operation of hurvostinc. The advantages of these crops aro that the preparation, cultivation, and harvesting are attended with but little expense, and it all can bo done by machinery ; the grain supply for the year is made in the winter, and thus the entire labor of the Hummer can bo devoted to cotton, &c. Wc aro, in a great measure, independent of labor and of the seasons. Wc utilir.e lands which arc otherwise worthless. It is superior in nutrient r properties to Northern hay, and is preferred i by horses to any other, it, therefore, rea) dily commands the best price. i If it is not desired to raise hay, the vetch I and lWimnln, in >haia pa I nish a luxuriant atnl Ytofe pnct??r? VJC ) and sheep during the entire year. : In the preparation of laud for cereals the l Rebel and Tory Pea are recommended as > the best. Thoy aro vigorous growers, with ' a long tap-root which loosens the soil cigh, teen inches dowu ; the seed remains in the i ground from autumn to spring without injury, and may, therefore, be sowed in the fall, with wheat, oats, &c., to succeed these crops in the spring. The seed, too, is very > small. The Ash Element is also an excellent fertilizer for cotton and tobacco, and for orantje and other fruit trees and grapes. It may be used as above, or else applied alone, or composted with cotton seed or stable manure, 200 to 300 tbs. per aero. And finally ice tcould caution our patrons 1 against an impression which seems prevalent 1 among some of them, viz : that they can I make a compound of their own which will 1 subserve the same purpose as our Ash Ele- ' ment- Even granting that they know the ingredients of our Ash Element (which we 1 doubt) they cannot know the proportions. * The formula was originated by l)r. llavcuel 1 and is known only to him. And even grant- ^ ing that the materials are all identical, the ' resultant compound to the discriminating ( perceptions of a plant may be totally different, just as with the same materials one ( doctor may make a curative and another a * poisonous mixture, and one cook a palatable I and another a nauseous dish. And even after getting the materials of s the best quality, and in proper proportions, it is of great importance that they be thor- J oughly incorporated, (so that the reactions J previously spoken of may take place,) and 1 this can be accomplished to advantage only ( by machinery specially adapted to the purpose. 1 Otherwise, if imperfectly done, you may * be treating .one sulk ?" - ,WUJ, ? alkali, another to acid, another to lime, and J so on. and thus iniure the plants and destroy/ 1 the whole usefulness of the compound. To use the simile above, it would be like a pie with all the meat on oue side, tho mustard on auothcr and the salt on another--not very palatable. Another important consideration. AH the materials for this compound arc bought by our Presidents, under the supervision of Dr. Ravencl, and every possible precaution is used to get them pure and of the best quality. .* ???? Death Struggle Between a Cat and a Rattlesnake.?About three weeks ago, during the beautiful sunny wcatbei we have had which induced the trees to bud and bloom, I was walking in my garden one morning, thinking about preparing for an early starting for spring vegetables, when I saw a largo rattlesnake sunning. My first impulse was to go to the house, get a gun and kill it. But looking around, I saw a very large house cat cautiously creeping upon the reptile. Anticipating a fight, and equally desirous of getting rid of the cat, which killed chickens, I coueluded to witness his attack upon the snake. The cat crawled upon its stomnch, pulling along on its feet, whisking its tail from side, to side, and every now and then stretching its neck to view the snake. When about eight or ten feet off the snake suddenly coiled up, sprung, its rattle, faced the cat and darted its forked tongue out rapidly. The cat commenced a rapid circle around th > snake, so fast in fact that the eyes could hardly keep up with it. At last it got near enough and made a dart at its enemy, but through providential reason it went high abovo the snake, which also struck at tbc cat, thus breaking its coil. The cat went too far and by tho time it had turned to faco its foe, tbe reptile was again coiled and ready for the attack. The saute method was adopted and carried on for four or five times, occupying at least half an hour. The cat wished to catch the snake, but seemed awnre that if it utisscd tho neck it would bo certain death. At (he sixth assault they Diet and | instantly the snake was wrapped in several ( folds around the body of tho cat, which used its sharp claws with deadly effect.? The cat had been bitten 011 the head and neck several times, and both continued to fight Tho snako was torn nearly to shreds, but did not unloose its coil nround its victim. The poison was swift and deadly, but before the cat died it caught tho snake's head in its mouth and crushed it, and fighting they died, tho snuko enwrapping the cat in its coils. The snake monsured four feet eight inches and had thirteen rattles.?American (?7<i.) Republican. As they sat upon tho steps he claimed the right to a kiss for every shooting star. She at first demurred, as bccamo a modest maiden, but finally yielded. Sho was even so accommodating as to call his attention to flying meteors that wore about to escapo his observation, and then got to "calling" him on lightning-bugs, at last got him down to steady work on the light of a lantern that a man was swinging at a depot in a distance where trains were switching. My ? plan is to catch the hawks. Being much f innoyed by them, I set a steel trap on top , jf a polo, set upright in the ground, and ? have caught, the last year, 17 hawks and 5 ^ nvls. Set tho trap on a pole C or 7 feet high, in tho open field, 100 or 200 rods from the houso. No bait needed. Traps I 1 use cost 35 cents apieco. I wish all farm- c era would try this. I have no doubt that n farmers lose annually 85 each, from hawks c and owls, to say nothing about the destruction of quail and partridge, and othor game. 1 At first glanco this seems a small matter, 1 but in the aggrogato it is thousands of dol- 1 lars. Satc. * The people first settling In the country be? tween Droed end Enoree Rivers, in the southern seotion of Union County, were of different religious persuasions. It is sertein that some of theee were Preebyteriens ; es, for instance, the ^ Ottersoos, Hamiltons and Gordons, on Tyger ^ river, about Hamilton's Ford; the Savages, ^ Hughesee, Brandons, Kennedys and Youngs, _ about Brown's Creek and Broad river. Samuel ' McJunkin, Esq., settled on Tinker Creek, Dee., a' 1756 ; James Otterson was on Tyger river the W ?me year. (See McAdcn's Journal in Foot'* ' tkctchea of N. C., and iu Howe's history of | Kxxj * " The first place of worship used by Presbyterians was Union church?so called because ised in common by Episcopalians and Presbyte ians before the Revolution?situated about it ire miles eastward of Union C. II. Soon after he war the Presbyterians erected a house of ^ vorsliip known as Brown's Creek, two and one- ^ islf miles from the Village, on the Pinckney oad. Of this church Samuel McJunkin, Joseph ^ dcJunkin, Wm, Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, Christopher Brandon, Abram McJunkin and ohn Savage are known to have served as Elders, ^ nd perhaps others. The Presbyterian) population along the Enoee and Trscr rivers had a place of worshin below loshcn llill, known as Grassy Springs Church. ^ lo Presbyterian Pastor is known to hare set- ^ ed in Union County before 1794, when the Her* ^ Fillinm Williamson became the Pastor of tho ^ air Forest church. In addition to his services i that congregation he also supplied the Brown's reek and Grassy Spring churches to greater er as extent. Before that period the people were epeudant for gospel ordinances upon occasional ^ iipplies. These supplies were mostly by resellers sent out from the North by the Synod FNew York and Philadelphia, then the highest idicatory of the Presbyterian church in the pj luntry. As population advanced ministers set- ^ ed in adjacent counties, prior to the Revolu- ? on, as, for instance, the Rev. William Rich- ^ rdson in Lancaster, Rev. Joseph Alexander, D. ., in York and the Rev. John Simpson, in Chesir. These ministers were not only active and talous in their respective congregations but ^ ere a kind of general missionaries in all the ^ ittlcmentg westward of their fields of labor. ?
