Thk Urowtii of Methodism.?On? of the marvels of the religious world is the growth and progress of Mct.hodism. * In June, 1744, when John Wesley held his first (inference, there ^ were onlynix regular preachers throughout the world, and a few hundred mouthers. Now therj are more than 100,000 Methodist preachers throughout tho world, and nearly 5,000,000 ii^fubcrs. lu tho United States alone there M^^about 23,000 travelling preachers, 27,000 lol HRu preachers nnd about 3,500,000 members. In 1800, before tho division of the Georgia Cont'ereuce, (which was once a part of the South Carolina Conference.) the Methodists iu Georgia numbered 54,t)(j0 whites. Now, only thirteen years later, thcfNorth and South Georgia Conferences number 88,983. In the lfctlo State of South Carolina, where this denomination is scarcely a century old, the membership, exclusive of baptised children, as by (lio recout report of their statistical seoretary^flumbers 44,791, with 100 travelling anunH local preachers. The number of adults admitted by baptism nloue into the communion of the M. E. Church, South, within the bounds of the South Carolina Conference, duiing tho year closing, is 1,308. Tho denomination hns, within the bounds of the South Carolina Conference. 497 Sabbath schools, with 3,041 teachers and 22,057 scholars. They have raised in South Carolina during the year 1870 for their worn-out preachers and the | widows and orphans of deceased preachers, $4,808 50. They have raised in the same territory during 4lns year for missions (exclusive of the amount rnisod by the Wenien's Missionary Societies) $7,905 52. These figures, statistical and financial, at once show the wonderful growth of this denomination in the past, and their immense possibilities ' ~^for good in the future. Tub Qradkii Schools at Greenville.?We are pleased to learn that the public-graded schools of this Township, after a short vacation, have been resumed. Mr. Mayficld has exhibited great energy in this work, and the community will give due credit to him, and tlioso who have aided him in inaugurating the graded schools in this city. The experiment ho undertook, has proved a success. These graded public schools arc the great desideratum of the times. .They arc the most efficient handmaid of popular education, which is now the watchword in nil civilized communities, and especially in free governments. The only difficulty with us, in South Carolina, is, in devising a system of popular education adapted to the wants of the people, nnd V within the limits of the means of the people to support the system. In this respect the prosent ?"system is defective. lJut in the progress of improvement in the Stato there is no doubt, that the happy result will be nttained, which will, give the State a plan of education, which will insure nn intelligent choice of law-makers; in Other words. There was a personal difficulty between Dr. E. W. Aiken and Mr. W. II. Smith, in which the latter was beaten on the head with a stick by th? former. The bill to incorporate the company has been passed by the Legislature. The next move is to orgauize the company. For this purposo a meeting will be held at the court house on the first Monday in January. The public generally, the corporators especially, arc invited to be present.
